Has anyone seen markings on a stock like this? It is on a New Ithaca Double that was manufactured in 1927. I would love to solve this mystery and would appreciate any insights you may have.

Thanks!

.

1) Welcome to SGW !

2) Your link doesn't show pics w/o registering @ snapfish, a non-starter for me.

Inventory mark of some kind. From what, who knows?

An organization that had more than one gun on hand.

Corrections and law enforcement used marks like these.

I would say the recoil pad was added later judging by the fit.

Thanks! I was thinking it must have belonged to some sort of organization as well. Wish I could learn more details. The Gentleman who originally bought it was 30 years old in 1927 the year the shotgun was made.....he lived in Iowa but is obviously long gone.

I appreciate your thoughts very much. Thanks again!

Like others have said some sort of inventory markings and they do look to me like maybe some LE/military style markings. In any case, they would not be hard to remove and followed by a good refinish would improve the looks. At the same time you could fit a new better pad or at least fit the current one properly. Good luck.

I have a 1939 vintage Fox-Sterlingworth with the same markings, an S and a 4-digit number. I was told at the David Condon auction March 1994 where I bought it that it came out of the armory of one of the old Shenandoah Valley military high schools.

No flaming bomb or U.S. markings on my "draw-bolt" Fox-Sterlingworth.

Ithaca's Lefever Arms Co., Inc. was advertising their Nitro Specials being purchased in quantity by the U.S. Navy by their second flyer circa 1923.

A friend that had a local gun shop until recently had a photo of a squad of sailors in the back of a stake-bed truck, many holding Nitro Specials.

I know this is an old post, but I came across it looking for info on a 1940s vintage Stevens SXS that has similar stock markings "S 6083"

My Grandfather bought it to go duck hunting with some friends, Grandma was PISSED about the cost.

Gramps gave it to me when I was 15 (1966) and I've kept it ever since.
