I wimped out and used my 12 gauge SX3. I was thinking about using a 20 gauge for the first time on doves, my "new to me" Superposed Lightning, but since my assigned spot was in a low place I opted for a little more oomph. I just hate not to get a limit on opening day. Might try the 20 tomorrow.

playin'hookey,

This is not meant to insult you in any way, in our family our tradition is not so much shooting limits of any kind. It's enjoying our fine mountains and God's gifts to us of his incredible wild birds and game. Many times my brother and I have purposely limited our kill. Especially where wild Quail and Woodcock are concerned. Our enjoyment comes from our incredible gun dogs, fantastic double guns and the companionship of a good hunting partner. It was the way were were raised, in fact my Grandfather toward the end of his life, only shot true doubles. Once he achieved the double he just walked along enjoying the dog work and us boys learning to Grouse & Woodcock hunt. Shooting our limit in our family meant little to nothing, great sportsmanship however was demanded by our fathers and grandfathers. We do use our 12 gauge guns from time to time, mostly we use our sub-gauge guns for the challenge and to give the bird a higher probability of escape in the big forest. It's not how many birds you shoot, it's how you shoot the birds.

For your poll, I shoot SXS double guns when I hunt 99% of the time.

Dave, I love your family’s traditions and your appreciation of the essence of sportsmanship and camaraderie in the field. Thank you for sharing that.

Do you mean which SXS will I be shooting? Well, unless it is deer hunting, then it is which rifle. The shotgun will likely be the Featherweight L.C. Smith I inherited from my Father. Not sure what I will be hunting as several seasons are opening near the same dates. Nothing against anybody else's choice but the SXS has always liked me better!

geometric,

We definitely agree on using SXS double guns as we hunt, we also agree on using L.C. Smith double guns.

Old Bird Hunter,

Thank you sir for the nice comment on our families way of life.

I own a Purdey 20 that I haven’t shot in years. I plan to take it out the first day of quail season providing the weather isn’t foul. For pheasant it’s going to be the 12 ga auto loaded for very long range shots. Our pheasants get up almost out of range.

After the first week of polling, Semi-Autos are leading, followed by O/U’s.

I'll use all semi-autos this year. If I make it out for Kansas Dove, I plan on taking my Franchi Affinity 3 20ga synthetic with a Wad Wizard swat tube and some home rolled 3/4oz steel 7's (I hunt non tox areas for doves which is all I have access to).

If I don't make KS dove, it will be because my cousin in SD had called and let me know the honkers are flying! If that happens, I'll be headed north with my Hatsan Escort 3" 12ga and some home rolled Rotometal Bismuth 1's. My backup gun will be my 12ga Franchi Affinity 3 with a Wad Wizard Supreme tube.

And if all those fail, my opening day would be the SD Pheasant opener which always gets my Benelli Ultralight with a Patternmaster short range choke and home rolled 1 1/4oz nickel plated 5s. I'll have a box of Bismuth 4's for any non tox areas and one of the Franchis will come along as backup.

casonet,

You own a beautiful 20 gauge Purdey that you have not used in years! I recommend you start hunting Quail, Grouse and Woodcock with that fantastic Purdey double gun, sell the semi-auto guns and purchase good RST shells for you Purdey 20 gauge gun. The only gun better than the Purdey 20 gauge is the Purdey 16 gauge self - opener.

Enjoy your incredible Purdey 20 gauge double gun, I wish I had the retirement money to acquire one.

If I am not mistaken, the self-opening feature of Purdey guns was universal in its use throughout their line once they acquired it from Beesley around 1880. IOW, all Purdey doubles are self openers. Correct?

I think Casonet is indeed fortunate to have such an exquisite gun and in a gauge that I am particularly fond of for upland game. I would be trying to wear it out if it was mine. You all are obviously "walking in tall cotton"! {hs#

We had a decent opener here in the South Zone of Texas on Monday morning. It rained 2" over night so that definitely didn't help matters. We knocked down three dozen, so only about 80% of our three man limit but we enjoyed sitting around BS'ing with one another and popping open a few cold ones well before lunch lol.
I am going to get after them again on Friday if the forecast holds up.

We had a Benelli Legacy, Remington 1100, and Remington 870 in the group. Oddly enough we had a failure with the 870 with the lifter.
