Hi, The grouse season opens this weekend and normally I'd be roaming the northern Minnesota forests with my tried and true 28ga SxS. But not this year. I will be using my new Browning A5 Sweet 16. I've never been much on shellshuckers, but for the Sweet 16, I'll make the exception.

I just recently found this forum. I grew up hunting with my dad. He gave me a Beretta A390 in the early 90’s. I loved the gun and hunted with it for the next 20 years. Then not too long ago I ran across a deal on a Beretta 686 20 gauge and got really excited about the idea of dove hunting with that. However, I’m trying to get my son into the sport and took him shooting clays. He immediately took a liking to the 686. So I gave that gun to him.
To make a long story short, my dad passed away a few months ago and I decided to dove hunt opening day with one of his guns. I picked a Winchester 101 XTR 12 gauge. I had honestly never heard of this shotgun. My dad owned quite a few guns, but mostly hunted with 2 or 3 semi-autos. But damn, I really enjoyed shooting it! The 686 is more sleek, but I think I like the feeling of the way the 101 mounts better. I’m going dove hunting again in a couple of weeks and plan on hunting with it again. Also, kind of seems like my dad is there with me if I use one of his shotguns.

For the MN pheasant opener I used a Browning Maxus Hunter. My one son used my Beretta Al 390 12 ga, my other son used my Winchester SX3 12 ga for the opener. The next hunt I will take my Browning BPS Upland Special 16 ga.

I believe every state will be open after this weekend. Semi autos and O/U’s are in the lead. There WILL NOT be a recount !!

7dawg9,
I use my SXS double guns on opening day and every day I hunt after that. Seldom if ever do I hunt with a pump or a semi-auto no matter the gauge. Grouse season opens before Pheasant here in Pa, but it stays in till late February.
