If you could buy an unlimited amount of your favorite target shells at normal 2019-2020 prices, how many total flats would you keep on hand for the next year or more?

Right now, because supply is so uncertain, I`m afraid to shoot any of my target shells for fear of no replacements come next dove season. I haven`t broken a clay in almost a year. Also, I anticipate future shell prices to significantly limit my shooting as well.

I have more now than I have had in previous years and have only recently been shooting with any regularity since a new facility opened up with a 5 stand. Between factory and components, I'm good, but if I can find primers and powder, I'll add more to the stockpile

I am not a hoarder by nature, but this latest ammo crunch has made me rethink that some. It would all depend on the prices and as the OP said IF they could be bought for 2019 prices I would stock up with 40 plus flats.

If I didn't need them, I could just sell off to friends and maybe help them out some.

However, I doubt we will ever see those prices again.

I generally shoot 8-10 boxes a week, so 50 flats would give me a year’s worth in the bank. Then I would buy as needed during the year to keep that in reserve in case of shortages or other price hikes. The price per box never seems to never go down, so not much to lose in stocking up.

I picked the 25-50 flats but what I guess is 50 flats as that is what I would get in a manageable pallet. I have plenty of ammo as I write this. I have flats going back to 2008. It is not that I am a hoarder per se but rather I have stuff like 1350 one oz loads that I don't care for. I use to use them on preserve birds. Anyhow, I just try to buy when I see ammo at a good price and keep the oldest going out the door. FYI, I shoot approx 9-10 thousand registered and 2-3 thousand practice each year.

I would buy 10-15 flats. That would basically be set aside for 2022 and major events that require factory ammo. That is in line with the 13 flat list I have given to the guy trying to put an order together with our clubs May target shipment. It may or may not be available at that time.

I have enough factory and loaded reloads and components yet to reload to take me to roughly middle 2022.

I did buy 8 boxes of Federal 28 gauge at the local Walmart today. That was all they had for target ammo. There were also about 10 small boxes of buckshot or slugs that I didn't really look at beyond that fact.

I agree that for now and some time to come, prices will be higher than we have seen in a number of years. It may not come back all the way but I think it will ease in time and be better. Good supply will eventually drag prices down some.

Since I reload and have plenty of supplies for now, my answer is 0 which is not on the list. I haven't bought any factory ammo in about 6 months, and don't intend to until I wear out my current supply of hulls.

I don’t hoard, I manage my inventory because I don’t want ammo supplies to disrupt my shooting. I have done that ever since the Obama years. I try to keep my inventory above 50 flats at all times.

Luckily, I have managed well and don’t need ammo, but I would buy 30 flats of 2 3/4 dram 1oz 7.5’s if available at under $60 a flat.

I try to keep 40 flats in "reserve" for times just such as this, and I am close to dipping into my reserve now. So, I would buy a year's worth of practice shells if I could get them at pre-covid prices. 25 flats at a minimum.

I try to keep about 10 flats on hand at a time. I shoot 100 rounds a week. Probably continue to do same, even when supply opens back up.

I always try to keep at least 30 flats. I had about 30 flats in Feb. when Covid stuff started flying around. I didn't need anymore but I figured with the election I would stock up some more. I have enough to get me through next year and half or so if the rest of the family doesn't shoot much. I only shoot about 150 rounds a week or 5k a year myself. That being said, if I see any in the 60-$75 range I will be buying another 30 flats.

I went with 100+. I'd probably go 200 cases knowing what I know now. That'd get me around 10yrs of shooting. Having said that, if no one else has any ammo, 10yrs of shooting alone will get pretty boring.

I answered the poll wrong.

I thought the question was how many cases would I buy at a time.

For the last few years I've been buying 10-25 flats each time I get close to running out. I still have 3 cases from my last bulk buy last year and have padded that out with some stuff I find here and there. Otherwise I'd buy 10-20 more as normal.

I shoot shotguns 3-4 days a week avg of 75 shots per day. Last fall I purchased 30 flats (10 twenty ga 9s for skeet, 10 twelve ga #8 1 oz for skeet, 10 twelve ga 1 1/8 oz #7.5 for trap). I've been shooting all winter when the weather permitted and should be good until mid-summer. I didn't buy it to hoard, I shoot it and I have been buying ammo 2X a year in bulk like that for the past several years. I can't be bothered running off to the gun store or Walmart every week to buy a flat here or there and hoping they have what I need.

Unfortunately, my young shooters are going to suffer this year it looks like. We sat out last year because of Covid and now this year it's looking like we wont have shells to shoot because of the hoarding, it's really sad

according to the poll, the hoarding will never end.
if shells magically appeared tomorrow the shortage would still be going on with everyone buying between 30 and 200 flats.... or the equivalent of everyone answering buying all the shells a store gets in at one time.

Couldn't answer since the volume I purchased would be entirely dependent on value.
