Does barrel swing (fast/slow) effect your pattern? To be more specific: Is it possible to swing a mounted gun fast enough to spread your pattern horizontally. I would imagine there are opinions about this but I had searched the WWW and found nothing.

it takes about 60-ish microseconds for the wad to clear the barrel, @ 1200 fps.

hmmm....thats about the time it takes for some older Bipolar power transistors to switch ON. To slow for fast switching power supplies.

just had to add that in.

......effect = none. :D

You would have to be swinging the barrel faster than the shot and wad was moving down the barrel. So the answer would be no, it does not spread your pattern horizontally. Swinging does, however, allow your aiming/pointing to pace the target, especially on crossing shots. Stopping your swing or point shooting generally results in shooting behind the target.
This is how it was explained to me anyway, I hope it makes sense.

Bruce Buck (The Technoid) at shotgunreport.com did a write up on this subject. He came to the same conclution as the previous two posts, the shot leaves the barrel too fast to be able to be affected by the speed of the swing. He also says if you think you can effect the pattern by having a smooth steady swing you should continue to think that.

A number (big) of years ago, there was a short article in some magazine that reported the grab-ask test a couple of duck hunters did at a lake. They were on a knoll and had quite water to conduct their trials .

First one guy shot off-hand and the other guy behind him got an idea of the shot pattern on the water ; then the shooter
would swing-through and the observer would try to judge the
change in pattern width .

They gathered, after a bunch of swapping between shooting and observing and varying swing speed, that they couldn't
"see" any difference to speak of . They said their biggest challenge was trying tokeep the level of the barrel reasonably consistant from at rest to swinging .

Had to have been after Brister's tome on shotguns .

Try this. Tie a rock or weight on a string and whirl it around your head in a circle until you get it going good. Let go of the string. Now, did it fly sideways or straight out from where you let it go?

It does not matter how fast you swing the gun. Any added velocity to the shot will be in a straight line from where the barrel is pointed when the shot leaves it. And you would have to swing awfully hard to increase the muzzel velocity much.
