My wife and I both took up trap shooting this past summer and have had quite a bit of fun at it. She has been shooting a citori and I have a Ruger sporting Clays. The other day I was looking through a rack of new shotguns and picked up a BT-99. This is the first one I have ever had in my hands. I went to break the gun open and at first I thought it was stuck. It opened hard. It closed even harder and the lever on top for opening it had to be forced back to the closed position.

My wife's Citori is a little stiff and you have to make sure the lever is all the way closed before firing, but it was nothing like this.

My question to you BT-99 shooters is, are they all this hard to open and close or is this just a new gun thing and that it will loosen up and open and close easier.

I would like to hear what y'all have to say about this.

Thanks

No. They are no harder to open, than other break open guns. The gun the you handled was either very dirty or had some other problem. B.T.99's are realy great trap guns. Very little trouble with them.
No, the one I looked at was brand new, never fired. If the salesman hadn't been so backed up with customers I would have asked him about it. I was seriously contemplating getting one but not with an action like that.

Oops, I guess our posts crossed.

When I bought the Citori for my wife, it was new but was nothing like this 99. I am used to my Ruger though and it practically falls open when you flip the lever. It takes just a wee bit of effort to cock it at the end. There are a couple guys at the range that have them and I will see if I can check theirs out next time we are there. Thanks.

This is not unique to the BT-99. All break open guns have the potential for this problem. Most will loosen up after a couple of times out to the range. Some will need adjustment.

The adjustment for this is very fine and is done with sand paper or a file, not a screw. So, don't try it unless you know what you're doing.

My BT-99 is 31 years old and I bought it used. It was very loose when I got it. I sent it in to have it tightened up by a smith and it got tightened a little more than I wanted. No matter, after a few times to the range it is opening with ease now.

My Cynergy needed adjustment. It had failed to loosen after 500 rounds or so. These guns have a screw adjustment for the tension.

Thanks for your responses fellars. Goose, I was thinking maybe it was just stiff and needed cleaned up, re lubed and broken it with a bit of firing but not having experienced any of that with my other O/U's wasn't sure.

Thanks again everybody. BTW, I really enjoy these forums. Been lurking long enough and thought I'd open things up with a question of my own.

I won a BT99 in January of this year and the first few times at the range I had to use a lot of pressure to open and close the action. After a few hundred rounds it is still tight but nothing like it was when new. It seems the more I shoot it the looser it gets.

BTW, it's a darn nice trap gun.

My new 99 was about the same, pretty tight & hard. It has "loosened" up after 800 shells so that now it pops open and breaks smoothly. A good overall cleaning after I got it helped as well.

Rastoff,

Is yours a plus? I just looked at a 1991 vintage plus, and it had a screw on the front of the forend that looks like it adjusts the tension of the forend to the receiver.

The new 99 I shot 6 month ago did not have that but it was tight to open and close, sure beats a floppy barrel.

Are you looking for a 99?

fastarget,
Mine is not the "Plus" model, but it does have the screw on the front of the fore stock. However, that screw is only for holding the iron to the wood and nothing else.

There is no "tension" adjustment for the BT-99, any version, except the sand paper.

Rastoff,
Thank you for the explanation, I thought maybe that was an adjustment for tension.
That actually is good then, the plus we were looking at is pretty tight still, in the browning case with a number of chokes and a release trigger, asking 1500. Nice gun.

If the Plus is in really good condition, clean stock and no scratches on the metal, $1,500 would not be out of the question. The Plus has an adjustable pad, comb and rib. It's the quintessential set up for a Trap gun.

Agreed, we are going to get together and try the release trigger. Hope for the best.

I have been shooting my 99 for two years now . . . 100 rds per week and of course 200 at the matches I've been to (I normally shoot 16yd, HDC, DT). I thought mine would never loosen up till I bought my XT. Wow talk about tight! Anyway my 99 had loosen up quite a bit compared to the XT.
