I thought I was going to be in Iraq by now but it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon if it happens at all. Sounds like the locals are really destroying job sites and causing all sorts of trouble.

I'm asking the good people of SGW for some input and ideas. I need to find something to keep me busy. I cannot handle this retirement stuff. Originally I thought I would be shooting every day but that started to get old after a few months and lately I've had an eye infection that stopped me from shooting.

If you were 30 years young with nothing to do what would you do? Give me some ideas.

Here's a little backgound. From the age of 15 I started boxing and fought until I was 25 when an elbow injury ended my career. I'm the first male child in the family since my great great grandfather was the middle weight, light heavy weight, and heavy weight champion of the world. I guess carrying on the family legacy didn't work out although I wasn't far from the heavy weight championship.

When I was 22 I bought a commercial painting company and sold that in 1999. After that I started an internet business selling and distributing automotive performance parts which I split up and sold off last fall.

I need something to do but I don't want start another business and the few places I've applied at seem to wonder why I'm applying for entry level type positions. I've had a few interviews but they pretty much pass me off as being over qualified.

The wife went back to work about the first of the year because I was driving her nuts at home. I've traveled and seen most of the stuff I want to see.

Any ideas?

Depends on what your money situation is like. If I were you, here are some things I'd consider doing:

1) Learn to black smith/bronze smith/machine/otherwise work with metals.

2) Go back to school for PhD.

3) Independent film making.

4) Become wealthy through the manufacture of balloon animals.

Well, maybe not the 4th one. I guess it also depends on your money situation. Do you have a steady income from something else? Or would you have to worry about $$ while you're pursuing your next career?

I'm just looking for something to keep me busy. I don't need it to provide an income. This is actually one of the problems I've faced. One interviewer asked if I need a job or wanted a job. There's a lot of people out there that need a job to pay bills and put food on the table.

I already mess around with metal fabrication, I'm always building stuff. I just have basic tools, no machining equipment but I do have mig and tig welders that get lots of use.

School is something I've thought about. My understanding is one of the better gunsmith programs in the country is close by. It's hard to imagine returning to school. I was one of those people that hated it and couldn't wait for it to be over.

Maybe I look at things a little too simply, but here is what I would do if I were looking for a way to make money. I would look at the Help Wanted ads in some of the major newspapers in the country. Then, I would determine which of these jobs pays the kind of money I would like to make and has the requirements that I could meet with little (if any) additional training or study. Once you've identified that type of job, then prepare yourself for it ASAP and then go apply for it. Naturally, if you need to make some money NOW, a job that would require 4 years of training wouldn't meet your immediate needs. But there is nothing that says you can't work one job to meet your immediate needs while you are preparing for a job that will pay much better in the future.

I guess I was writing my last post while you were writing yours. If you don't need to make money, do some volunteer work. Many worthwhile organizations could use volunteers. You would be helping them and helping yourself to feel better at the same time.

That's a good one. You could volunteer to help your state NRA group.

I suggest you do a few things:

1. Voulenteer at your local church/syinigog/temple/holy place. Thats allways fun, and doing good work for your future.

2. Start Traveling

3. Take up some more hobbies.

4. Apply for a service job. Run for office. Like city manager, mayor, commisioner. School superintendant. Somthing you would like.

Tell us what you like to do, maybe we know of somthing else.

go pick yourself up an old 85 k5 blazer, and build it up into a mud dragger. that oughta take a few months of hard work.
This sounds like a lot of fun but I could see it causing me to visit a divorce lawyer in the near future. Race cars, automobiles, etc have been a problem area. She tells me I pull the wool over her eye's when it comes to these items.

Get a part time job at a shooting range. You get to meet a lot of good people and get enjoyment out of helping the newbys. I truly get a big kick out of helping the young people break that first target. Just to see that look on their face.
I do like this idea and it's something I've been working on. In the early 90's between fights I was managing a sporting clays range but the owner passed on, his family developed the land and built an executive home community.

Hmm independently wealthy and loves shooting, I'd recommend adopting an older child, older than yourself... I have a resume ready to send...

the volunteer ideas are probably the best, besides if money does become an issue later on, you'll surely have made some substantial contacts..

hi d d , here in mo. our con.dept has vounleteers for the shooting range and hunter ed. classes how about that ?
or you could check into becoming a con agent, mostly outside and get to carry a gun, and for the most part get to catch poachers and put them in jail, errol

I can not imagine the joy I would have if I could spend my time out in the wild. A conservation job would be my dream job. When my wife gets out of medical school, I might have to quit my desk job as a computer nerd and take a job in the wild. They probably wouldn't even have to pay me!

Have you ever played golf? I'd play 36 holes a day in your situation! Except days I was shooting. Maybe golf in the morning, shooting in the afternoon, or vice versa.
Other than put put golf and a few buckets at the driving range I've never played any golf. Not much interest in it. I'm sure if I did start playing it would grow old soon enough just like shooting did everyday.

Is there any way you can teach boxing? I know some sports you either are good at it or you aren't. Is that something you have considered? I would have loved to learn to box as a kid.....instead I learned music. Those boxing lessons would have came in handy a few times when I was carrying home my trombone.

Gunsmithing school would be a good idea, I do understand about not liking school though, I'm the same. So if you learnt some gunsmithing, and you said you do some metal work, maybe you could offer a service for some shooters. You said you don't need the income, so just charge enough to cover your costs, that way people would want to use your services. Take your time and do quality work and build a good reputation for yourself.

I need more hobbies too, I just can't think of any.
