I'm getting into shotgun sports, most notably sporting clays. I'm curious what you tend to see most often in terms of barrel lengths on O/U's on the course and what you've found is best for you.

Would you say it's 28" or 30" ? I guess maybe it could be 26" or 32" on the opposite ends of the spectrum, but I'd assume most people are going with 28 or 30 as they lie in the middle of the range and seem more versatile.

I guess I look at it that you're going to have targets at all different angles, distances and heights and each gun has it's advantages and disadvantages regarding barrel length. Or maybe I'm way off and all different barrel lengths are seen at all times, opposed to a certain length being more common than another.

Would love to hear your feedback!

Most of the top guys are shooting 32's...a few 34's and maybe one or two are shooting 30's. Unless you're shooting an auto , no one is shooting 28's.

not only are most of the top guys/gals shooting 32" SO IS MOST EVERYONE ELSE

I went in all the shops on vendors row this weekend at Nationals and the shops were full of 32" guns :!: A few 34" guns, very few 30" and I did not see a 28" O/U period.

This might be too broad a question to ask here, but what's with the trend of the longer barrel lengths, both in sporting clays and in general?

Are people finding the added barrel length and weight is helping with swing or is it the sight line down a longer barrel that is drawing more interest?

New to shotgunning, so this is fascinating to me :)

The longer barrels can create an optical illusion of needing less lead for a long target--to some people.

The longer barrels tend to smooth out the swing ( I think this holds true for most people).

I usually shoot a 391 30" barrel. Today, I shot my 28 ga Beretta skeet gun with 28" barrels & choke tubes. It was quite whippy, even though in skeet it is great. Is there a weight that doesn't look totally goofy (clamped on to bottom of barrel), one that maybe fits under the forearm?
