Bob Brister, marksman, author, sharpshooter, conservationist and all-round great guy, passed away yesterday - a victim of cancer.

"The shooting world has lost a great friend and advocate," said Shel Bascom, a family friend for 25 years. "Bob immersed himself as deeply into shooting sports as he did into writing, and he was always helping new shooters. We won't see the likes of him again."

Brister played a key role more than 25 years ago in forming the Gulf Coast Conservation Association, now the Coastal Conservation Association, which started in a Houston tackle shop and has grown into one of the nation's most powerful marine conservation organizations.

He also was instrumental in bringing "sporting clays" target shooting from Europe to the United States and was recognized as an expert hunter, marksman and shotgunner.

Fare well, Bob, you will be sorely missed.

His "Shotgunning...the art and science" book is the best all around wing and clay shooting book I've ever read...I still pull it out from time to time when I have questions or am experiencing problems. Her will be greatly missed.

A belated, but honorable condolence to a kndred spirit.
I didnt read his book until i was 47 but learned so much from it.
I get so much more out of myself and my shotguns becasue of all his efforts. He made it possible for me to get through all the myths and garbage you can hear, or read, along your path to understanding the shotgun. That book should be mandatory reading for anyone before they pick up a shotgun.
He made me a better handloader with an understanding of how to get better patterns out of all different chokes. Also how to tweak those loads to get tighter or looser patterns from any given choke. Unless I get lazy, almost don't need to change chokes as much anymore.

I was just looking for his email, wanted to thank him.

After reading and re reading his book and practicing with a BB gun was finally able to shoot a shotgun and hit something.

Sad to find out he passed on.

He and Jack O'Connor were my role models. I learned what I know about shotgunning from those two gents.

All of us shooters, hunters, and gun people owe Bob Brister and the other greats like him, that have not only helped us with information but gave the non shooting world a look at responsible hunting and gun ownership. Without men like Bob Brister,Skeeter Skelton,Warren Page,Tom Knapp,Elmer Keith,Jack O'Connor,Charles Askins,Col Townsend Whelen,ect... our shooting sports and our hunting would look alot different.

Brister was my hero as I grew up. I read almost everything he wrote as I grew up on the coastal bend of Texas. He made me a duck hunter and I got to meet him face to face only five years before his death, but in that short time we became friends. I was able to thank him for making me a better hunter and a better writer. I have often found myself quoting his book when asked a question.

He was and honest, strong and talented man. I miss him very much.

I'll have to read a little better and pay more attention to the details.

Thanks, Doc.
