Getting ready to start reloading some 28 ga here shortly (My gun should be here next week :D ) and am looking for some info from you guys who load them regularly.

On my 12's, I load 1 oz at about 1150 FPS and am very happy with them for all my target sports, but am wondering what types of loads you all like.

I will be loading AAHS hulls, and would like to stay with Win 209 Primers (Readily accessible and low cost around here) and am thinking I'd like to stay with Hogdon powders (Use Clays for my 12 and love the stuff, super clean).

So, what are some of your favorite recipes for skeet loads? Sporting loads? If you like other powders, let me know too, I'm not going into this with too many preconceptions :)

Any and all info will be appreciated.

I like Longshot with the 28. I load 15gr in the AA and STS hulls with the pt28, fed28s1, claybuster 28 and the waa28, BP's sg28II, all using the w209 primer.

In my opinion LS is the most versatile for my needs.

WW AA HS hull
Cheddite primer
13.5grns. WSF
WW AA HS wad
3/4oz. shot of your choice

A full strength but very soft shooting competition/hunting round. Clean burning and easy to work with as WSF sits very low in a hull allowing you to get everything in with no muss, fuss, or white knuckle crimping necessary.

AA HS hull
3/4 ounce shot
14 to 14.3 grs. Hodgdon Universal
Rem. PT28 or WAA28HS wad
Rem. STS or Win. 209 primer
Right around 1200 fps at around 11,500 to 12,000 psi depending upon specific charge weight, primer, and wad combination.

OKShotgunner,

It has been my experience that Universal does not fit (bulging crimps) when using the AA HS hull and the WAA28HS wad. The PT28 wad works fine with Universal. I use the CB WAA28HS clone and Longshot.

Thanks Guys I appreciate your inputs.

Looking at the data on powder websites, it looks like the Longshot combo at about 1200 fps produces about the lowest pressures for the same veocity and performance (9800 at 1200 fps), so that may be where I start. Concerning wads, I'll probably use the CB equivalent of the AA wad, as they seem to be the most common around here.

Novice_Shtr,

Make sure you get the WAA28HS CB clone, not the WAA28 CB clone.

novice,

I'm pretty new to reloading 28 ga myself. One of the smartest things I have done thus far was brew a pot of coffeee and browse as many of the threads in this forum and dealing with 28 ga as I could.

That is why I am kinda surprised no one has yet referenced the Micr-technologies 'Duster Red' wads. More than one 'veteran' on this board has stated they are "the best things to happen to 28 ga reloading (and especially in light of Win going to their "new & improved" 2 pc hulls)".

Anyway, since you're about 20 times closer to Recob's Target Shop (in Wisconsin) than I am, I just thought I'd mention them to you. (Ordered a case several weeks ago but am waiting until I finish several other projects before I tackle the H-S 28's I've collected).

Good luck!

PS - Please let us know your experiences, yes?

I currently load old AA's with Winchester primers, 13 grains of Universal Clays, Clay Buster WAA28 wad, and 3/4 oz shot. I also load some hulls with 15 grains of Long Shot with the same components as above. I use the Universal Clay loads for Skeet, and the Long Shot loads for Sporting Clays and Trap. I honestly do not know what I am gaining, if anything, with the different loads but this is what was recomended to me. Maybe I am just causing myself some agravation having to change the bushings and all, maybe I should just choose one or the other and make reloading a little simpler.
If anyone has some input on this please post.
Later,
Phil

thor_sen,

Red Duster wads do not work in the Winchester AA HS hulls. If they did, I would be using them! I use Duster wads for my 20 gauge and .410 reloading.

Guest,

At 50 fps difference, I would just pick one load or the other and be done with it. I actually prefer how the Longshot load patterns but the Universal load is a little cheaper.

Yipes! My bad! Thank heavens I also ordered a case of the Win H-S wads when I recently ordered from Recob's (wish I'd gone ahead and ordered a case of the CB-Hs as well but, something someone wrote on this or another forum kinda shyed me away from them and to the Win (OEM) wads. Thanks for keeping me honest.

Thanks for the info on the CB wads Scott.

Unfortunately, now I gotta find me a 28 ga loader too. I'm figuring either a MEC Grabber or possibly even a 9000G. Trying to find one I can pick up cheap. I just know I want one with the resizing die.

Thanks again everyone for your input.
