From a carbine, pistol? Better penetration from a longer barrel, but regardless, I have found a 158 jhp in the carbine really puts a hurting on them. I have a buddy that shoots a Blackhawk pistol and he uses it on hogs as a last resort, with a 158 gr lead semi wadcutter. He prefers to use a rifle, but carries the gun when archery hunting.

I've killed several hogs with various rifle calibers, but have never shot one with a pistol. However, I wouldn't hesitate to do so with 158 grain JSPs in my 4" S&W. Just like with the rifle, I'd be sure of the shot placement. I've seen 'em killed cleanly with the .22 WMR and head shots, although it's not for me.

Smith & Wesson 686 series revolvers may not have sufficient elevation adjustment for the 200 grain Double Tap load unless a taller front sight is installed.

The 180 WFN will usually group just slightly high for me at 25 yards with the 180 WFN and the rear sight bottomed out:

The Double Tap 180 and 200 grain WFN .357 bullets have a .270" meplat (flat nose).

Both show extreme penetration and as a bonus, are the most affordable factory loads of this type on the market.

A .22 short will kill a hog at close range. Never figured out why most people drive their rented Iowa class US Navy battleships out to go hog hunting.

By this reasoning a .22 short would make a great deer rifle caliber as well!

Funny how State Game Departments will disagree with this for deer hunting but encourage .17 and .22 rimfire for feral hogs.

On the other hand, hunting hogs on the ground in thick cover is another matter - there Robert Ruark's advice to "use enough gun" remains true.

A 22 short will work if you prefer to wound or piss off the pig. We do want to dispatch them as humanely as possible. If it means a bigger caliber, so be it.

Just because it is possible doesnt mean it should be done.

A .22 short will take any animal in North America. Don't you guys aim for the head??? You guys must of thought I was aiming for the shoulder area, LOL. At the other end of the .22 scale, even the .223 will smoke a hog with a head shot. It drops them like they were hit by a bolt of lightning.

And BTW, the old school .22 has taken more game than all other rounds you can think of combined. It's put more meat on the table and fead more families that you can shake a stick at. Don't believe me, ask your grandfather. And his grandpappy.

Lets look at what people refer to as humane kills. When someone pulls the trigger, they intend to kill the object. Death is death. Does it make you feel better if the subject expires in 6 seconds than 7 seconds? You meant to terminate the subject. Must be in a hurry to kill another animal or what? Is this humane killing mentality a time game now? Some reason it makes people feel better about killing if they take a 155mm Howitzer with them. I see it all the time out deer hunting, guys using a .300 Win mag with trophy bonded bullets designed for cape buffalo. All that hardware on a 125 pound white tail deer. You could clap two bricks together and startle to death a deer, LOL.
