Hi Everyone,
I am trying to determine the value of a 12gauge side by side shotgun that my Dad got in a trade a few years ago. The gun is a 12gauge double barreled shotgun with sidelocks produced by Armas Maguregui in Eibar, Spain for MVL Gunshops, Inc in Kingsland, Ga. It has 27 7/8" barrels and the serial number is A026. The bluing and wood are in good repair. I was able to find a few mentions of the manufacture when I went to google but the manufacture did not have a website and did not answer the phone when I tried to call them. The only other place I could find information about this company was a blog in Spanish that I used google to translate. I have included the text below. So does anyone know any resources I can use to find out more information or has dealt with guns from this manufacturer before?
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Matt

"In late 1978, is its own gunsmith shop, located at No. 28, Street T. Anitua of Eibar, called ARMS Maguregui, manufacturer-branded SE, associating his son Ramon Maguregui, to engage in the repair of all types of hunting weapons in its various forms and both domestic and foreign brands, while start a small arms production, manufacturing Shotguns and Rifles Express type juxtaposed, standing between the guns, the Model Special Competition No. 1 and No. 2, whose technical characteristics and design the markers considered appropriate qualities to perform the type of clay pigeon, whose discipline of competition was very popular at that time. The above model was equipped with a MONO-TRIGGER AUTOMATIC PATENT No. 503575 - International Code F41C19/00 dated 30/6/1981, which was devised by himself."

Wow!

Every once in a while something comes along that really surprises me!

As you know, what you have is an Armas Maguregui sidelock ejector gun with all the bells and whistles (beautiful engraving, hand detachable sidelocks, gas escape valves, hinged front trigger, etc...) probably built before or right around the time of the DIARM era (1980s).

What I find really interesting is that in your search for information on this gun, you stumbled across the blog of Ramon Maguregui Epelde, son of Jeronimo Maguregui Arrieta. I could not find much information on Jeronimo Maguregui, but his mother was a Arrieta --possibly related to the Arrieta family that continues to make great Spanish guns to this day. Of even more interest is that Ramon Maguregui is the current actioneer for Pedro Arrizabalaga, one of the renown manufactures in Eibar than also continues to make very fine (and expensive) Spanish guns. Due to these connections, I suspect that your gun is a custom, very well built, high end Spanish live pigeon gun made by some talented people.

As to value, I believe that the selling point for is going to be difficult to establish. In today's market, many if not most enthusiasts of Spanish side by side shotguns are attracted to guns built by well known makers in tradition of the light English game gun --that means straight grips and splinter fore-ends. You have, what appears to me, to be a very fine gun built by a relatively obscure maker (little direct name recognition but with strong connection to some very well known makers) built with what appears to be full pistol grip which is not very desirable in the current market). Add to that the difference between what a shop may list a gun for and what that same gun will actually sell for at auction and in my opinion prices are all over the map. I think your gun might be able to sell for $4500 - $6000 or more with the right buyer or on the flip side you might struggle to sell that gun for $2500-$3000 on the open market with a site like gunbroker.com. If we could see some more pictures of the gun, to include the fore-end (does it have a beaver tail fore-end or a splinter fore-end?), the barrel flats (does this gun have an assisted self-opener?), the water table, the butt of the gun (what does the figure of the wood look like on this gun?), etc... We might be better able to pin down a more accurate value for your gun. I also suspect that you are going to get a variety of opinions (high and low) from some very knowledgeable people regarding the quality and price of this gun, which will just further demonstrate how difficult it is to price such an object.

Very interesting. I love learning about Spanish guns. Thank you David!

Thanks for the help. The gun does have a splinter fore-end with some engraving on the latch. I am having dinner with my folks next Wednesday. I will take some more photos and post them on Thursday.

Matt,

I'd be especially interested in photos of the water table and barrel flats that show the markings there. It is these markings that can tell us where and the year the gun was proofed (from which we can get a good idea of when it was made). These markings will also contain the maker's code for the gun's maker - which will permit us to confirm the maker really was Maguregui.

When it comes to Spanish shotguns, the markings on top of the barrels are advertising. The true manufacturing data is on the barrel flats and water tables.

Yeah, that is one interesting gun, and one interesting follow-up David. Thank you for sharing, MB, and thanks for the detailed info, David. I too am interested to see more photos.

One thing more, you have a gun engraved in the style of the Holland and Holland "Royal" pattern. Google their guns - stunning. Many makers have copied it over the years, Pedro Arrizabalaga being one of them.

I took some more photos of the gun yesterday and I found out from e-mailing Ramon Maguregui Epelde it's a Royal DH model manufactured between 1985 and 1998. He said that they were selling for $4,000 new back then.
