I figure since I have been posting more I should formally introduce myself. I live in NW Illinois. I am 26 and just recently got into firearms. A family friend has a CZ bobwhite and told me to look at CZ as an option for my first purchase. After much thinking I went with the 912 for the extra shot if I miss with the first two. A couple months after that I found a 70's Wingmaster for sale for $200 and couldn't turn it down and added it to the collection.

Right now I just shoot field clays. I'm waiting for a "field day" for the Illinois hunting license program and once I have the license birds sound much more fun than deer to hunt. Plus much less meat to consume.

I go to the local Community College full time while bartending and working at the local coffee shop in the nights and afternoons. I am getting married next June to my girl of 5+ years. All advice is fully accepted

Sorry for the low quality of the pic, but this is a scan of a cheap print out the in-laws gave me...

Anyways, this is the wife and I last Nov. with our 5 month old Vizsla pup, Pearl.

Now Pearl is almost one. Based on how well her nose was tuned onto birds last year (she found a few dead ones before the 4 yr old hunting labs did---though they got it picked up and retrieved before she figured that part out). Not really gun shy much at all as a pup, so we just fed her more and more experiences as we went out in the fields around birds. Very bird crazy, and a natural strong pointer that just locks up when she finds one. I feel this year's challenge will be stopping her from chasing after the birds flush, obviously an important correction to make.

Well, I guess it's high time I posted an introduction....

As my screen name suggests, I am from Minnesota, and I served (albeit only 4 years) in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. I've been a gun owner since my parents bought me my first shotgun (Ithaca model 37, 20 gauge) when I was 12 years old - just in time to go grouse and duck hunting that fall. I've been an avid hunter ever since. I am a DNR certified volunteer firearm safety instructor, and over the past four years have been instrumental in introducing nearly 300 new hunters and shooters to the sport.

Welcome MnNavy! and thanks for your service. That is great you are working to educate new hunters.
I commend you sir!
Welcome again!

Greetings MnNavy and welcome to the friendliest and funnest forum on SGW! Do you still have that Ithaca? I got mine at age 12 too, and it's still my favorite shotgun.

Welcome to the club MNNavy, and good for you being an instructor, great to see you have brought so many new people into the shooting sport.

Welcome. Good luck with the pup! Be careful with correcting on the chase. You don't want the dog to associate the bird with pain/correction.

Simply don't shoot the bird for her (let it fly off).. unless she holds. This is easier "SAID than DONE" when using wild or "paid for" birds on a preserve.

Keep us posted on your progress.
Good Luck,

Maggs

Yes, I do still have the Ithaca. It's pretty much a safe queen now, but I doubt that I'll ever sell it - too much sentimental value. I posted a picture in the "other guns" thread about a month ago, but I guess there's no shame in posting it again.

My brother has a Ithaca pump .16 not sure of the model. That gun is as old as the hills! He still loves to shoot it though. He never remembers to pump it though and is always missing clays or birds because of that :)
He can pump that puppy faster than an auto though and hits doubles pretty good.
Pretty amazing to me....

I could be wrong, but I think the only pump Ithaca has ever produced is the m37.

You may be -but in this case you are correct! It is an older version of the Model 37.
This is not the gun but it looks exactly like it:

The Model 37 has been in continuous production since 1937 when it was first introduced, longer than any pump shotgun ever made. During WW2, Ithaca made fewer shotguns, but in addition to the small quantity of sporting guns, they made guns for the military.

In 1987 Ithaca moved it's production facility to Kings Ferry NY and renamed the Model 37 to the Model 87. It was produced as the Model 87 until 1996 when the name was changed back to the Model 37 - it was the same gun.

Ithaca has never made any other pump shotgun. As I said earlier, why mess with perfection?

My brother aquired this old M37 when a friend of my dad's died in a helicopter crash in Vietnam.
No telling how old it is. IT has had many a shell put through it over the year and slayed countless dove and duck.
