ScratchX has a few other uses around the house. Spend the $10 to pick some up so you have it. Maybe try a small spot on the fore end. I also has fears but I liked the idea that I too could have a beautiful stock like others have. For me it came down to this: I don't hunt so the gloss was not a concern, all I do is shoot with friends and clients who would forgive my desire to dress my gun up a bit. I only wish my wood had a better grain to show off.
It's been at the ready for a few weeks now..............just need to make up my mind as to matte or shiny..........I like em both !!

Shortly after I did the scratchx/Howard's treatment I gave my entire gun a Johnson's paste wax application. I had read that the paste wax could be used on the barrels as well as the wood. I must say, although completely unnecessary, the paste wax made everything look great. I supose if I had a habit of shooting in the rain or lived some place other than the desert a coat of paste wax might provide more protection than the Howard's I typically apply. For me, the paste wax was not as easy as applying Howard's feed and wax.

Although i used scratch out it seemed to have the same results. The 1979 wingmaster had a nice finish to start with. However, scratch out took the grime and dirt off and cleaned it up real nice. Mind you, it was sitting for a long time on a shelf handled by who knows how ever many people. It also sat in a case for a long time to the point that the barrel was pitted with rust. I actually replaced the barrel because of the pitting. I will post pics when i get my nice camera out. I am glad i stumbled accross this thread. Where do i get the howards wax?
