Remington 1100 Competition Synthetic

I have owned a Remington 1100 Competition Synthetic for about a 5-6 weeks, and have put roughly 500 rounds through it. It is absolutely the softest recoiling 12 gauge I have ever shot, and I shoot it as well or better than my other guns I have been shooting for several years.

The odd thing about the gun is it seems to cycle the lighter loads better than than heavier loads. I have had zero issues with the guns cycling my hand loads (1oz, roughly 1200fps) and 1oz Winchester Super Target (1180 fps). My father owns the same gun and has no issues with 7/8oz 1250fps hand loads. I have noticed cycling issues with the Wal-Mart Winchester Universals and Federal Field & Target Loads (both 1 1/8oz, 1200fps). Coincidentally (or probably not), my Beretta 391 has occasional issues with these shells.

The second shell seems to stick halfway out of the magazine tube with most of the failures. Another club member had the same issue, and inserted a plug into the magazine tube to increase the tension on the magazine spring, but noticed no improvement.

Any ideas why the cheaper ammo would stick halfway out of the magazine tube? Is this an issue with other Remington 1100s, and if so, is there an easy fix for this issue (or am I better off just not feeding it the cheap bulk shells it doesn't like).

Thanks

Confused on the type of malfunction you're having . Can you elaborate on sticking half way out of the magazine tube? Also confused on how putting the plug in creates more tension on the mag spring. While cheap loads can cause malfunctions I haven't experienced any ammo sensitivity in any of my semis and I shoot cheapest rounds on the shelf. This is a good gun and should handle the cheap stuff too despite it being a recently made Remington . If not that's sad because I have an old sears 66 that does! Lol

Is the shell stop not holding the second shell in the tube? Are you fully inserting/seating the second shell in the magazine ?

Very UNcommon issue. I am assuming it is stopping with the bolt to the rear. Or is the bolt closing? I wonder if that new "improvement" to the carrier latch is involved, but I don't see how that could do it either. Have you cleaned it really good, including the interceptor latch and spring - wild guess I admit? Good idea on compressing the mag spring just to try it. Lots of people have had ejection issues with the Universals - mine rip the bases, but this is the first issue I have heard of like this.

More specifics needed on malfunction. Is it a failure to load in which the first round ejects and the second one is being pushed out but then gets stuck halfway?

Hmmmm, have you disassembled your 1100 for cleaning yet? If so did the feed latch pop out? Seems like to me the gun is fine and so is the mag spring but the round is getting hung out because something is impeding it that's not where it's supposed to be. Half way out of the mag tube, something is in it's way I highly suspect the feed latch or there is a burr somewhere around the opening of the magazine tube. Get back to us, this will most likely be an easy fix. I understand the newer era Remington's don't exhibit the same QC as the older ones but IMHO they are still well made. If it turns out to be the feed latch slightly out of place don't bother trying to re stake it just use some loctite, that's what I and many have done.

The feed latch cannot move out of position with the trigger group installed and the pins in place. The staking is only for ease of reassembly. The strange thing is that this is only happening with some loads. I would tend to think a broken or maladjusted part malfunction would happen with all loads. Only thing I can think of is the shell is dragging coming out of the magazine and with the action moving faster with the heavier loads it isn't clearing the magazine before it gets trapped.
The rumors of Remington QC having tanked are pure internet bull. The Expresses are built down to a price point and it irks some folks that they can't get a Wingmaster for an Express price IMO. The Sporting guns have always been top notch. Every manufacturer mass producing things will have something slip by, but Remington customer service has always been top drawer.

That explanation makes the most sense. How would I fix the issue? It happens with about 1-2 out of every 25 shells.

When one stops that way quit shooting and look at it from all angles and see what is holding it there.
+1 and take pictures

Alex and Virginian -- Thanks for the responses and willingness to help. I will take a closer look the next time it fails to load the second shell.

My Beretta 391 Parallel Target had issues with the Winchester Universals until I changed the gas valve spring and the shell carrier to the "bent" one found on the 390s.

I am curious to see how the 1100 performs with AA or Remington STS factory ammunition (our club has a SC match this weekend). So far, it handles my 1 oz. reloads without issue.

My wices new comp syn is doinv the exact same thing ....

Shooting federal target loads at 1145fps.

Its a brand new gun, but when it shot today jt hung up probably 2 of 3 times. Hangs up half way out of the tube. Shell ejects, bolt stays open.

Could it have anything to do with the bump master stock taking too.much recoil out and not allowing it to cycle as clean? Sfretch i mnlw bit just a concern.

Follow up - I took the gun and tore it completely apart with the help of the thread here adn a video or two on youtube. Was very simple todo.

Went through the entire gun and scrubbed it down, cleaned it, and lubed it with a dry lube.

Shot it saturday and no issues.... hopefully my issue was just related to some assembly grease build up etc.

I'm glad I found this thread. I am having the same issue. I usually load from an open bolt, drop it on the shell then put one in the tube. First shell fires, then the action locks to the rear and second shell hangs up. Last time was at a night shoot so it was harder to see. I suspect it is on the carrier tab though. The only shells used are Win AA and Gun club both 1 1/8.
