I enjoy reading about other's experiences in smoking cigars. I once tried one or two about 60 years ago. I think the last one I smoked was an "El Reso". Cost a nickel apiece. I never could get the habit. Tried but I couldn't do it. It takes a real man to smoke cigars.

My worst experience was trying to chew tobacco. A guy offered me a chew of Black Maria when I was in my teens. Never been that sick before or since. I swallowed the juice. Best thing I ever did. It cured me from tobacco.

Some men can't take it, some men can take it or leave it, but some men can't leave it alone.

I am glad you are happy to have made a mistake Ev. If Man was not free to make mistakes, nobody would ever learn anything.

IME smoking cigars is not an acquired by taste. You either like them or you don't. By the by there is considerable difference between the little cheap gas station "cigars" like Swisher Sweets, Black and Milds, Backwoods etc. and quality hand rolled whole leaf stogies. Those who know the enjoyment of a good smoke you know you get what you pay for. For those who don't I'm sorry for your loss. :)

No arguments from me Duckwacker. Smoking gas station cigars is like eating street vendor food- you don't really know what your getting but you can be sure it probably isn't anything fit for human consumption.

First Sergeant used to yell, "Dammit Sgt. Lindsey, I knew you were coming cause I could smell that dog t**d in your mouth!" I quit over 20 years ago, but my mouth still waters just thinking about them. If the doctor ever tells me I have 6 months to live, look out! I'll buy and smoke as many as I can...pipe too.

Since the cigars I enjoy are not cheap they are generally for special occasions. I enjoy my pipes for everyday smoking. The great thing about pipe tobacco is the astounding variety. I bet you could smoke a different flavor or blend every single day for a year and never have a repeat. Speaking of which I think it's about time for a smoke now. :)

Pipe tobacco? I totally dig cherry cavandish. :D

Perique is good to , but I like to blend it with plain old burley to stretch it out some.

I'm interesting in trying a good pipe tobacco, as I've got couple of pipes (a corncob and a hardwood). Well, let me rephrase that, I've tried at least two, but they tasted like chalk compared to a cigar. Not really an unpleasant smoke, but nothing to get excited about either.

Any recommendations on a pipe tobacco for the, occasional, cigar smoker?

A cherry cavendish is good. It's definitely a mainstay. Good for throughout the day at work or even wandering around the woods with a shotgun. I received a tin of Drew Estate "Heirloom Cherry" for Christmas that was excellent. Dunhill Early morning pipe and Nightcap are also very enjoyable at the times their names suggests.
