Tomcat :

At the rate I'm running into them, parts shouldn't be a problem. I just walked into a Maryland gun shop on their Eastern Shore and walked out with another one. Exceptional condition single hump Western Field Model 30 in 12 for $250. The top-strap safety and the overall condition sold me. The gun seems lighter than my double-hump gun as well, but I have no way to confirm that here.

Wow! Somebody paid $705 yesterday for a pre-WW1 12-bore, solid rib gun on Gunbroker. I dropped out mid-way at $350. It did have an English stock with very nice wood, and seemed to be in very good original condition, but.......it needed the pad replaced, the stock looked short, and...... $705 is just nuts. Considering that little 20 that went for $660 a few weeks ago, I'd have to say that appreciation for these little orphan step-children is growing.

While I really didn't need another 12, ....I just couldn't help myself. My family was having a great time, but the trip was turning out to be something of a bust (as far as daddy-fun goes) so it was a pleasant distraction.

I took it straight from the little Easton, MD gun shop I found it at and shot two 50 round sets at sporting clays over two days with it. It fits surprisingly well, but it misfires about 2 in 10 shots (just dents the primers). I even tried several different types of shells, but that didn't help. Obviously, it needs a good cleaning and then we'll see what we have. It seemed to get better as I used it, but....I need to get it apart.

The gun has the Browning choke marks for "full" and it certainly is. Found myself riding shots out quite a bit to allow things to open up.

And I'm grateful for the ONE that I have LOL!!!!

Really though, great seeing any Stevens 520 that is posted on here. Looks like mine is going into the shop soon here to have the Action Arm welded/repaired. I'm sure I'm going to miss it!!!

I had mine misfire with a batch of reloads I made, that my Mossberg 500 shoot just fine after that. It dented the primer, but did not fire. I took the bolt out and pulled it apart and there was a bit of crud that I had missed from cleaning the first time. Got it cleaned up and put back together. It has had no problem with firing those same reloads since...

What I learned is next time I buy a Stevens 520/620. Take it apart and clean it, and ALSO take the extra time to take the bolt apart and clean it whilst it is apart and not try to "get what I can" with the bolt put together.

I have what I consider to be a pretty nice Ranger 102.25 (Stevens 520A) 20 gauge. Bluing is very nice w almost no blemishes. Stock is nice but could use a refinish as the varnish or whatever crap they used is not in the greatest shape.....but no real damage to the wood. I has a "poly-choke" on it and I have no idea whether that was a factory option or not. The gun was discovered in my F-I-Ls closet when we were moving my M-I-L out of her house. I had actually forgotten that he had it, and know nothing of the history of how he acquired it. I couldn't resist making an offer to take it off her hands as other family members didn't seem to want to deal w it. I was very clean "inside" and I fired off a few rounds at the trap club patterning board to make sure it functioned OK...which it did. Only problem w the gun is that it doesn't really fit me worth a darn. Guess I would have to figure out how to post pics from one of those hosting sites as I don't belong to any of those....if anyone is interested.

Lloyd3,

Do you have the auction number?

I looked in completed auctions and couldn't come up with it for Friday.

Thanks, Will

Crescent410: You have a gun that I've never been able to handle. I've seen expired adverts for long-sold ones but never had a shot at picking one up. If you want to email me with the photography, I can get it posted here, & if you ever get around a good digital scale I'd be curious to hear what it weighs. Measurements would be cool too (LOP, DAH, DAC).

As far as posting sites go, a free account on Photobucket is a piece of cake. Sign up, upload your shots, and you're off to the races. The free version is a bit slow (loaded with advertising), but it works well enough.

I also wanted to mention that the sporting clays range I was shooting at in Maryland had this exact same gun for sale as well, except it was a JC Higgins 102.25.

Lloyd3...thx for the interest. I'm still working on the picture thing but I checked the other info you suggested.......

LOP.....14" measured to heel / 13-7/8" measured to center of buttplate
DAH.....2-1/2"
DAC.....~1-1/2" approx. based on my own cheek placement.....just a guess

Weight.....6 lbs.....I got this using a digital bathroom scale .....1st me, then
me w gun....the difference was 6 lbs.

Regards.....Randy A

Will:

I knew it was a special order gun, but I didn't know it was the "Trap" model. Maybe $705 wasn't so much after all? If I might ask, how did you know about the model designation? I've never run across any reference to the Model 522 in my reading.

Thanks!

Lloyd,

Researcher01 has posted cuts from the early J. Stevens catalogue here on Shotgun World in the past I believe.

I have seen original advertisements for it in "American Field" and have seen three other guns for sale. Some of them are actually marked 522 but I didn't see it on this one.

Dropped my Stevens 520 at the gunsmith today to be repaired... I already miss it!! LOL!!!
Not that bad, but looking forward to getting it back!

Should have seen the crud that was crusted inside of mine... Had not been cleaned since Herbert Hoover was in Office!!! LOL (Actually, might not be joking on that one?) But that is one of the things I love about buying old firearms...the challenge of cleaning them up!!
Can't wait to have mine back from the Gunsmith after being welded...

Sovblocgunfan:

You mentioned respringing as a common issue in these guns. Do you have any idea where a spare coil mainspring might be sourced for this 520a? Flat mainsprings are still available at Numrich. No mention of the coil version anywhere that I can find.

No, sorry, man. I would try to make one or buy a spare assembly off ebay:

I know above is 16 ga but the springs should be common...

sovblocgunfan: Thanks! Saw that one, but I fear that most of the used ones will have the same issue. In my digging around this morning I believe I've confirmed that the 620s used the same spring, and they are available on Gun Parts (part number: 620a-166) for about $20.
