Intro...Hello All. New to shotguns..lil skeet and not much else. A renewed interest compelled me to purchase a new Mossberg, 590A1, 18.5", with the factory Magpul furniture.

I like the HD aspect of this tool, however, I want to also have some safe range fun with my new firearm. I would be interested in hearing what folks like to do for targets and practice.
I'm not interested in making me or it, look like a "SWAT Team run-a-way", so maybe a led light and xs big dot site down the road. First plan is to practice with some Federal 2.75/7.5 and I would be interested in your thoughts and opinions. Thanks in advance for the great site and resource.

Welcome to Shotgun World!

The Mossberg 590 is a great gun. I guess it depends on what type of stock configuration and sights you ended up with; but my guess is with the 18.5" barrel, you'll spend most of your time working on transitioning static targets at speed. Not so much flying clays. Fun nonetheless!

Perfect gun for blowing up watermelons and milk jugs full of water. Very explosive results when you connect. Pretty much worthless if you try and hit any sort of flying target.

There are plenty of videos on youtube of people successfully doing what you say can´t be done.

Pointing a shotgun and leading a target don´t depend on barrel length, buttstock style, or the color of the gun.

Not true at all. I spent the first few year with my Mossberg 500 using the cylinder bore 18.5" barrel for everything, including skeet, dove, crows and occasional rabbit and more than a few hogs.

It's was a helluva lot of fun busting skeet targets next to guys with nice OU's and autos and pumps (yea, it was the '80s). Now I just tweak them when I break out the .410 Contender...

Just curious, but it seems more often than not that your response to a proud new gun owner is to trash-talk the gun

Why do you feel the need to piss on someone who is proudly talking about their new gun?

Ha, you noticed to too, huh? Unfortunately, shotgunning has more than it's fair share of snobs that believe if you're not doing it exactly the way they think you should you need to be corrected. Best plan is to just ignore them. But, FWIW, a gun with a 18.5" barrel would pretty much be at the bottom of my lift of choices when shooting flying targets as well. Not that it can't be done but it's can be done better\easier with more traditional barrel lengths.

To the OP, if you do happen to go to a clays course just be aware that you're gun may stand out a bit from what everyone else has. I'm not saying that's bad and you shouldn't do it just want to prepare you for what you may find. Also, I'm sure you find a few snobs there as well.

Hey Guys/Gals. Really appreciate the info...btw...no hurt feelings here on the 590. Please share opinions good or bad.I'll learn more. This was just my first SG "want one"...NOT my last, most likely. Sorta the same way I advanced my interest in the property from a zeroturn mower, to my now beloved Kubota tractor with fel/bckhoe..hahaha. Life's good, if you got a tractor and a shotgun and you're upright on the ground...right? Thanks again!

Of course, I'm way behind the times. This is the perfect skeet gun, all the top shooters are using basement ninja guns. All the major police departments are arming their tactical teams with Marlin .30-30's also. The military has adopted Red Rider as their rifle of choice. It's a whole new world in 2016.

No one commented on your knowledge of firearms just that you seems to choose to express them in a fairly obnoxious manner.

Of course he is. That's his goal in life to be as obnoxious as possible. He is still refining this.

TagAxle,
The 590 with magpul stock lends it's self to shooting clay targets, get a spare 28" vent rib barrel from Mossberg (comes with three chokes) and you are set if you have the comb set for the stock, if not they are on line for $15 per set of two ( high set 1/2" and 3/4") they also do a low set, this will allow you to get your POA/POI on the money for Trap, when you are done at the range put it back to HD gun.
