I'm changing out the firing pin on my 11-48...the last one broke. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the firing pin retention pin back in .. it seems the retention pin can only be inserted from below.

I have everything in the bolt put back together.. However, with the locking block in place, I can't seperate enough to get the pin started from below. I looks like the firing pin retention pin cannot be inserted from above

what am I missing here?

Gun is a 1950 11-48 16GA

I fought that battle a couple of weeks ago detailing an old 11-48. Once I had everything cleaned, I made sure that the pin was an easy slip fit in the retaining hole, then used a little dab of grease to hold it in place and three or four hands to assemble it with the bolt and slide oriented as they would be in the gun. That means, of course, that I couldn't see the pin and, by holding the firing pin forward in the bolt, I basically let gravity lock the whole thing together. A word to the wise, though - make sure you have the "action bars" or whatever they are called at the rear of the bolt already in place, because when you mate the slide to the bolt, you will not have enough room to slip that pin in place that holds them. Yes, I figured that out the second time I did it.
There may be a different way to do this, but this one worked for me.
The 11-48, like its forbear, the Model 11 and Auto 5 just serve to remind us how smart John Browning was. Imagine if he'd had a fancy computer to handle design instead of just his amazing mind?
