The 25cm rule for where this line is to be situated on the shooters clothing is quite clear though I find it interesting they use the word jacket and don't refer to vest, coat or even shirt for those who use a pouch. Looking at the explanatory diagram it would appear the 25 cm follows the contour of the shooters upper body and the cut of the clothing so I'd guess there's some advantage to being a larger individual if mounting is an issue.

My questions are:
1) Did you measure this yourself and then have the line sewn or ironed on?
2) Is there a line that can be purchased or did you just use a piece of material?
3) Is there a requirement I don't see for the line to be a contrasting colour?
4) Has your line ever been checked by shoot officials to see if it conforms?
5) Has your line ever been challenged by shoot officials or anyone else?
6) Have you changed guns or the stock and been concerned about the line on an existing piece of clothing no longer conforming?

Thanks!

#4 - I check the line; most times it is close enough; sometimes it is not so #5 is a yes. The lines I have seen on vests tended to be embroidered, not a separate piece of material.

1) Had a certified ref chalk a line on the vest, then took it to an embroiderer
2) Embroiderer. Alternately some permanent markers can work.
3) Don't know that there is one, but since the point is that the line be SEEN, why wouldn't you use a contrasting color?
4) Every time I shoot registered FITASC, the ref checks the line. If they don't I ask them to do so.
5) If you call measuring challenging, yes.
6) The gun has nothing to do with the line, which doesn't change. Regardless of the stock measurements, it has to start below the line. Now you MIGHT have problems with a severe weight gain or loss making the line shift a bit.

Simplest option, if not the most visually appealing: Have a ref chalk a line before you shoot a registered event. Clean it, start again next time.

In the USA , we use gold thread. Not gold plated , not silver. B/c we are the greatest country.

HAHAHAHAHA

birdshooter1, thank you very much!

Good point about the line not mattering what gun is used. I must have been thinking about raising my adjustable comb and having an issue. The issue will really be having to hold the gun even lower.

I wondered about not using contrasting colours in case someone might try to slip a mount past a Field Judge on a station who's got lots of other things on their mind.

Embroidery sounds like a good idea. Not knowing much the subject I take it that means making the line itself out of a heavy thread rather than sewing on a piece of material?

Don't over think it. Walk up to the first parcor, the ref measures you and draws a line with chalk, off you go.

Just that easy.

It is exactly that easy. If I am the ref on your first parcour of the day, you will be measured and marked. This is simply sidewalk chalk and easily removed with a washing. (BTW your ammo will be checked too. 28gr is what I look for mostly)

1 oz is verbotten. 28g only.

Seriously

I was going to get a line embroidered on mine but... at the last few FITASC shoots I've attended, the refs at about every other par re-measured and re-chalked. And NONE of the lines were in the exact same spot on my vest. One of my buddies has a line embroidered on his vest; one ref used it, two others went above or below with chalk -- not a lot mind you, but seems to be an over/under of about ½" or so between refs. I think the big issue is where any given ref starts their line from; top of your shoulder further out, more in toward the neck, or in-between, then coupled with how much ammo you have in your vest...

That can be due to weight gain/loss or how much clothing underneath the vest. Colder days with several layers versus warm days with just a T shirt can make a difference.

Jack: Best thing about the line is the kool faktor. 8) Who cares if it's exact

Haha, amen to that!   Seriously, most refs chalk the embroidered line even if it's in the right spot anyway, if nothing more than to confirm it.

* There are more than a few guys out there that shoot primarily with pouches and have lines embroidered on polos -- also pretty kool 8)

The line thing is stupid.

If you have a vest on the line can change up or down depending how many shells you have in the pockets.
Yep. I will sometimes hint that the line should be measured with pockets full, then empty them to let the line rise a little if it matters that much. It will make a 1/4 inch or so difference.

At an event years ago I shot with a Russian who used what looked like a pink sheet of adhesive paper that had been cut into 1/4" strips. Each day he took one of the strips, removed the adhesive backing and applied it to the shirt he was wearing that day. Worked well and lasted all day.

At the Would FITASC a few years ago I was on a team with an Italian, a Pole, an American, and a young girl from the Swedish National Team.

For the rest of us the ref measured the line, and chalked it. For the Swedish girl the ref measured and re measured, chalked and re chalked, like he was painting a picture, until I pointed out to him she was probably underage and to move on :)
