Well, I have had my eye on this one for over a year. It got moved to West Virginia about 6 months ago for a prospective customer to inspect. He didn't follow through on the purchase.
Walt was gracious enough to look it up in the Ithaca records and even though it has a 1947 serial number, it shipped in 1948. Records say that it was a "plain" 37S 20 gauge with a skeet choke. It was not engraved at birth.
We surmised that it was sent back sometime in the '60s or '70s for #1 pattern engraving and Supreme wood. The R6 on the receiver is a good sign that this is indeed a factory engraved gun. I was really hoping for an Alpen signature on the left side of the receiver but no dice. The stock doesn't have a serial number stamp so I can't determine the year it may have been sent in.
By the way, it was filthy on the inside. My guess is that whoever owned it was afraid to take it apart. I will be making a special trip to shoot sporting clays with it very soon.
More information on #1, #2, #3 and #4 engraving patterns can be found in Walt's "Ithaca Featherlight Repeaters" book on pages 184 and 185.
