I currently have 2 12-ga Remington 11-48s with barrel "issues". The first was found in a pawn shop by my Dad several years ago. It has an MOD choked barrel that has been cut down (roughly sawed off) to about 24 inches. The second one (IC choked) had an accident with an obstruction (dirt dauber nest) in the barrel with the result being a barrel that now resembles a banana peel at the end. If this barrel were cut down, it would be about the same length as the other. I'm curious about what kind of choke I have left in the two. The barrels are short, but still usable for quail and in brush. My question is, are fixed choke barrels choked just at the muzzle like the screw in ones, or are they tapered through the length of the barrel? I guess I could try to measure the muzzle diameter to determine what the resulting choke is if I had the proper tool for the job. I've looked for replacement barrels, but I seem to be able to get good used guns for about the same price. Also, does anyone have any idea what it would cost to have one or both of these converted to screw-in chokes?
