I believe that the best .22 going is the Browning Autoloader...
the one that you load the rounds into the side of the stock....I have one that is over 40 years old....made in Belgium by the way....and I have kept it in mint condition. I love the thing....solid as the day I got it. Check it out on the Browning website.....I have to laff....I bought mine for 88.00 at Sears when I was living in Calif....they go for about 480 bucks now!!

The best .22 made is about the same argument as the best shotgun made. I guess it depends on what you're going to do with it and how much you're willing to spend. Marlins are about on par with Mossberg. They work and do it well, for the most part.

I have had and shot many .22's from Remington's, Rugers, Ithaca's, Westernfield's, J. C. Higgins, Winchesters and others. Ieven had a Ruger 10/22 with Midway target barrel, Fagen thumhole stock, custom trigger assembly and 36 power scope. The most accurate one is the Savage Mark II LV .22. I have been able to cover ten shots with a nickel on several occasions. I liked it so much that i bought a model 93 with heavy barrel in .22 mag and it is almost as accurate. These guns are not as expensive as most, but they are not as pretty either. One fact still remains. If I do my part, the rifle will do it's part. I you want to hit the X then get a Savage, if you want to show off to your friends then get a pretty one. This is only my opinion. Truth is if you buy a well known brand you can hardly go wrong.

Ruger 10/22....throw it in the dirt, pick it up..shoot it!!kick it across a dirt road, beat a dog with it, cuss at it, throw it in the dirt again, give it a dirty look, And it will still shoot!

*note* All actions "besides" shooting should be performed with the gun UNLOADED!!!

I have done All of them "except beat a dog".... that just seemed funny to say!

Take care,
Jab.

Ruger 10/22 unless you like bolts then I'd get the CZ452.

I have heard great things about the TC Classic .22 rifle. My choice would be a Ruger 10/22. If your not happy with it you can build it up with almost unlimited options.

LOL, That's what I did with mine, I put A target barrel & A glass reinforced stock on it.....My 10/22 was the first gun I ever got so I kept all the parts for it, Probably put it all back together when I get old....eeerrrhhh...Older, I mean, & hope!

take care,

Got a little marlin 60SS a few years ago ... and while it is not as trendy as the ruger 10-22. I like it much better .... put a little 3x9 scope on it and many damn squirrel saw the ground rush up on them as I knocked them from their perches on high.

Light, Fun, easy to maintain and accurate. Just not alot of expensive after market crap available for it. But all I wanted was something to plink and kill tree rats with. And it does that just fine. And I saved a few bucks at the same time.

My vote goes to the Ruger 10/22. One of my buddies bought a bolt aciton because he thought it was more accurate than an auto-loader. It just kills him when I outshoot him. I think it has more to do with the shooter than the gun in this case. 10/22's are still accurate guns though.

Ruger makes fine guns, I just don't buy them for a personal/political reason. I stress they are fine guns!

I really like the Browning Lever Action .22s those are nice guns. I also like the Marlin .22s.

I've got many 22 rifles. A 77/22 Ruger with a Shilen barrel. it's like shooting a laser beam. An old Winchester 69A bolt action that was my dad's when he shot competition in school. I put a fixed 4x scope on it and it still can shoot dime size groups at 50 yards. Got a chinese made bold gun a picked up for $130 new a few years ago the shoots great. I also have a couple of Marlin bolt guns for my boys as they get bigger. One is a mini youth gun , shoots good, just has an AWFUL trigger. The other is a bolt action Marlin DU gun I have never fired. Dad has an old Remmington pump 22 that is great as well.

If I were to buy a new one tomorrow I would first look at the Ruger 10/22, cost to quality is very good. IF I was doing a lot of hunting (squirrels and such) I would look as a good bolt gun . Ruger 77/22 are very good. CZ makes a great one as well, they remind me of the pre 64 Whinchester guns. I have a CZ in 17HRM that is just awsome to shoot.

Also look at used guns as well. A good old Winchester 69A, or 52 or Remmington pump. Just find something with a decent trigger. If you got deep pockets, look at Kimer and Anshutz.

Boy, this is just like going into a bakery and asking someone which is the best dounut?

I'm still looking for a Remington 521-T. I'd really like the one I traded off for a cheapo Winchester automatic in '64! Oh well, I traded the Winchester for a new Browning 22 auto in '65. I've got Rugers, Savage, and one or two others I can't think of right now. The best "for the money" is probably the Norinco bolt action I paid $82 for some years back. The one that shoots the best is probably the Ruger 77/22 and the one I like the looks of the best is the Browning. The one that is the best for teaching my Grandkids to shoot is probably the Savage/Stevens Favorite! My least favorite is probably the Ruger 10-22 target model with the laminated stock and hammer forged barrel. Weighs too much and spits the danged empties down my defroster vents on my pickup! I hate it when that happens!!
