After my first season last year of Trap shooting my SKB Field grade 600, I decided to step up and raise the stakes this year.

I joined the ATA and upgraded to a true trap gun that I purchased from a fellow forum member, a Browning 725 Pro Trap in close to new condition.

So, I shot my first event today, small turn out and only did singles this outing. My group only had three shooter and the pace was faster than my informal shoots last year. I will admit I was tired after the forth 25, unlike our shoot 25 then go BS with the boys and shoot another 25 after 30 minutes, this was back to back 25's.

For the first time out with a new gun I felt good about the first 50 I ended up 21 on each, after that I got tired and got 18 on the each of the last two 25's.

The 725 Pro Trap is a big girl compared to my SKB with 28" barrels, but she is smooth on the swing with the 32s and so little recoil it's hard to compare.

I can't wait to give doubles a try and then shot some handicap to get my standings established. It was a cold day here in the upper 20's and the wind was steady at about 15 mph.

I to Just bought a 725 HR Adj comb 32"and love it shooting trap, no kick swings smooth, (age 60 started new hobby) But I will admit for just singles I would love to try a unsingle barrel on it too

Lawdog......Its good to have a new member shooting ATA registered trap. Just the volume of targets available and shooting more will improve your game. Being around more serious shooters. Making new friends also extends your available trap related info.

Stick with singles for your training grounds. Being good at singles helps a lot in handicap. Every time you come to a peak in your average it will be time to either be satisfied or work at finding your mistakes and bad habits. Then finding a way to fix it. Some bad habits seems like are for a lifetime and will take effort to break. Some will require constant effort every shot. Gun fit and setting the point of impact to your personal preference remains the only true secret in the game.

Good luck {hs# maltz

Derry. You need to retire so you can shoot with us on Tuesdays. Participating in ATA events will help your shooting, and especially concentration. Break'em All!!
Lee, I would love to and would enjoy getting back with the guys this year on Tuesday nights. However the bucks they promised me said stay another year. I am hopeful I'll be able to make a few this year.

I need to start working on mounting the gun every night just to build up my stamina for the shoots. I really was tired by the middle of the third 25, I think it would have been better with 5 shooter on the pad.

Thanks for the advice Maltz, I was pretty happy with the first 2 sets, being my first ATA event and a new guns first time out in a match. I had just had a couple of time out to practice prior to the match and that was to try and get it adjusted to fit me.

We will see how the next one goes!

Yeah rbdjr, I am really impressed with the 725 and just how well it swings. I'm sure I could have spent more and shot just as good, but I don't know if I would have shot any better. I like you would love to have a unsingle barrel for this one, but she has everything else I wanted.

Oh I forgot, you can call me Sir, or Mr. I've got 5 more years on you!! 8)

Get a couple of 10 pound dumbells and start working with them if you don't have time for the gym. It is easier than getting the gun out every night and you can work well past the strength needed to shoot 100 targets.

I'm 71 and go to the gym 3 times a week and have no problem shooting 300 targets in a 2 hour practice session.

you definitely need to work your way into shooting several rounds in a short period of time.
and the speed shooting doesn't help, 5 guy's is a good cadence your prepared and set to shoot.
3 guy's and your just getting the shell out of the chamber and it's time to shoot again, it will wear you out in a hurry.

You are correct in the pace of shoot, eject, reload and call for the bird just as fast as you can speed with just 3 shooters. I'm in pretty good shape, but just not use to that pace and amount of continuous rounds.

The one good thing was you didn't have time to have a bad thought prior to your next shot!

Check into the big 50's. Many clubs register targets during week days. The club will offer 50 singles, 50 caps, and 50 doubles. Some clubs mix non-registered shooters in with the registered and offer a jack pot program where you can choose to register or not. Shoot in real competition and maybe win some money. I do one for our local club. Its great and an easy way to get your target count and average up to speed.

Shoot well......Maltz

I'll have to check that out, sounds like fun!

Being a first year ATA shooter, I'm not sure what I can do and it seems that a lot of the matches are being cancelled due to the Wuhan Flu.

Thanks for the info!

I have not shot since March 15th. DAue to Covid-19 and shutdown but for the last 5 or 6 weeks I have been mounting my gun everyday. Started out with 50 reps and now I do 100 per day with 3 or 4 minutes between each 25. Could not believe how tiring 50 reps were when I started out. Now 100 is pretty easy.

I just got back from the KS state shoot. 4 days of shooting fun and a record crowd for KTA. Very well run shoot for a small 20 trap club, with a record crowd of 350 from 25 different states there. KTA had to cap the event and turn shooters away not having enough daylight time and facilities.

I would have been in MN at the Cebelas shoot, Owatonna for those 4 days, but their jerkoff Governor closed the state and hasn't opened outdoor activities yet. Saw a lot of my MinnidamsOta friends at the KS shoot. Shooters were just happy to be able to compete and shoot. Didn't even grip about the wind and we had big wind every day. The youth shooters were just down the road 1/2 mile to another trap club to shoot their program. Also a record crowd.

The trap shooters I know are willing to travel great distance, spend any amount of money needed to play this game at its highest level. Where open they will travel.

Great fun KS boy's.....thanks for a great time and a well run shoot.

So as it turns out this year has been a bad year to try to take Trap shooting to a new level. I have only been able to attend 3 ATA events this season and little to no practice time with work requirements. Work was shut down for six weeks and while I had the time to shoot everything was closed or cancelled.

I did get the chance to shot all three disciplines a couple of weeks ago, but the lack of training and practice kept the results wanting. The one bright spot was my first every doubles try went better than I had expected and I ended up with a 74.

I'm hopeful the season will end better, but the way it's going they'll shut us down again. I guess after the election is over we'll see some relief from the madness, Vote to kept America Great!!
