Does anyone have a recipe for this load?
Hodgden load data only has recipes for 1 1/4 and 1 3/8 loads with this powder, I'd love to load 1 1/8oz #8 and #7.5 lead for skeet/trap and dove loads......I'm sure some of you out there have tinkered around with this powder and have a safe load I'm looking for on the 572 powder.

572 is quite slow on the burn chart, next to Blue Dot. I'd bet the only 1 1/8oz loads you'll find, if any, are VERY magnum loads.
Gotcha, i can get this powder fairly reasonable right now but but I guess the limited data and use on shotshells explains why.......back to the grind I guess........

Pull up this article and attached 12 bore data for low pressure smokeless. It has 572 in one ounce and 1.25 ounce loads.

Note: Cheddite Paper hulls have the same plastic basewad as plastic walled Cheddite hulls.

Interesting article, thank you, I'll have to look into cheddite hulls.

I think there's a good recipe out there that hasn't been tapped yet for 572 powder with the load I'd like to shoot with AA, Remington or a plastic hull/wad combo of some sort.

Until then I went on and ordered a couple pounds of Winchester wsf ...........

If 572 works for 1 3/8 oz. loads in the 12 gauge in Winchester hulls (there is loading data for it) 572 isn't going to be a great match for 12 gauge 1 and 1 1/8 oz. loads.

Winchester 572 is a great 20 or 28 gauge powder. It is also a good powder for 1-1/4oz to 1-3/8oz high velocity loads in 12 gauge (there is a reason there's no data for 12ga. 1-1/8oz and lighter loads).

It's tough times finding powder and lots of people are trying to use powders that they were not designed for. Just because it's a "shotgun" powder, doesn't mean it's safe for all shotgun applications. If your interested, load some up and send them off to be tested. You would most likely find (from lab testing) that the pressure is so low, there will be very inefficient powder burn with velocities all over the place.

Midway has AA Super Handicap and WST in stock.

I tried 572 in GM hulls last year for 1 1/4 hunting loads and frankly it was a little inconsistent velocity wise until it got to 1300 fps. I can't see it working with only 1 1/8 unless you really pushed extreme velocity with it.

There is new data on hodgdon web site 12/2023

I think you folks that want to use 572 for 1 oz. and 1 1/8 oz. 12 gauge loads are going to have to go back to the drawing board. It isn't the right powder for that. It likes hot primers and heavy payloads. Not target load applications.

I am not understanding why you want to use 572 when there is plenty of Perfect Pattern and Highgun around that both fit those loads perfectly.

Hmm.. let's see:
-OP wanted loads using WW572.
-Standard deviation in the single digit range.
-Velocity... 1200 fps.
-Load data developed by Hodgdon.

Yeah until the weather goes to 40 degrees. It's not the right powder, whether Hodgdon has loads for it or not. Why not use Steel, Blue Dot, HS6, Longshot for 12 gauge target loads? They will all go bang.

The only data that Hodgdon has for 572, with 1 1/8 oz. loads in a 12 gauge, uses the Podium wad. The data isn't all that awe inspiring if you look at it.

I had some other loads to chronograph so I thought I'd try what the OP is looking for 572 in a 1 1/8 oz. load. The load I used was not exactly the same as the Hodgdon. I did not have the Podium wads. I used a CB1100-12 wad. I tried to use a CB1118-12 but it was way too short. I can't believe that the Podium 12P18 wad won't be too short also, because 572 is very dense. All the other components are exactly as Hodgdon states in their data for 572 and 1 1/8 oz. load at 1200 FPS. I shot 3 warming rounds. Chronograph start screen was 2' from the muzzle and I used a baffle. The reloading room temp was 58 degrees F, and has been for a number of days. The ammunition was exposed to 35 degrees F for less than 5 minutes.

Here is the work sheet:

It is my opinion after having worked with 572 with a number of 1 oz. and 1 1/8 oz. loads in the 16 gauge that 572, is not at its best when used in the larger gauges, especially with a little foo foo load like this one. Add in some cold weather and it down right fails. The above, was not influenced to any great extent by the 35 degree temps. I literally have to walk outside about 125' from my reloading area to the chronograph. 3 warming shots, reset the chronograph and have at it. I also chrono'd some 16 gauge stuff, which did not suffer the same as this 12 gauge load. I will post that in another thread.

Thank you everyone for all the replies and info, back in feb 21 when I posted this 572 was about all I could get, here we are about to go into 2024 and my choices have become plentiful with powder and primers again, once again thank you for the inputs….

Another powder from Winchester line that makes a wonderful 1 1/8 ounce 12 gauge target/light field load, and is pretty available now, is Win WST (Super Target). Glad you have lots of shotshell primer choices.....many do not even now.

good luck, garrisonjoe
