I am new to this forum and to shotguns in general so sorry if this topic has already been discussed but I was wondering what the best low cost o/u for upland bird hunting is, I don’t want to spend too much more than $600.

you last paragraph sez it all lol. I see guys with pre 64 model 70's owned them for 50 years with perfect walnut stocks. never went out of the house with it. I switched to all synthetic stocks for hunting cause I scratch my guns cleaning them lolWhy limit yourself to O/U? There are cheap autos out there that are good and perfect for Hunting. Mossberg SĄ-20, Weatherby SĄ-8 (same Gun with "weatherby" on the receiver and + $100). I have a Weatherby in 20 ga. Got it for $200 on Gunbroker for $200 from a pawnbroker. Love it. Reliabe, very light, łów recoil, Composite stock. So, it doesn’t matter if you drop it in the mud, in a river, or on pile of rocks. I had several Citori superlights and was constantly worried about dinging the stock. BTW, I drove over a Winchester SX-3 with my pickup. No damage. So, If you plan to hunt driven birds in Scotland,, a Citori Superlight in grade VI is a good choice (around $8,000 if you can find one) or a decent Perazzi for $15,000.
So, the real question boils down to do you want to seriously hunt, or pretend you’re hunting and don’t want to be looked down upon by your peers.
BUT ....that is not WHAT the OP ask about ...is it ???Browning BPS or a Remington 870 field master is a better choice at that
Yet that is the best answer.....BUT ....that is not WHAT the OP ask about ...is it ???
Regardless ....it is still NOT an answer to his question....it is just more opinions....Yet that is the best answer....
I'll say this again. His whole question is SUBJECTIVE which means he will ONLY get OPINIONS! These is no objective "right" answer to his question.Regardless ....it is still NOT an answer to his question....it is just more opinions....
Why can't folks honest when a person asks a specific question ....he did NOT ask what was the best "shotgun" for less than $600 ....BUT he asked the best O/U shotgun for less then $600 .... Is that something folks can NOT understand?
Certainly one of the best.Yet that is the best answer.....
Is it your opinion that an 870 is an over under?I'll say this again. His whole question is SUBJECTIVE which means he will ONLY get OPINIONS! These is no objective "right" answer to his question.
These people are being honest. It's dishonest to recommend trash.
Not really, no.....plus, I never have been scared by a grouse flush into dropping my scattergun in 50+ seasons.Sometimes folks get fixated on one thing and have a difficult time considering alternatives. It wasn’t an opinion, it was a question. Serious hunting for grouse will many times involve busting brush in and around swamps. Standing in one place and shooting birds driven to you is not hunting, it’s shooting. That being said, there is nothing more pleasurable than walking down an old logging road with dappled splotches of sun making it through the rustling leaves with a close hunting Brittany as your companion, the temp at about 66°, an hour before sunset. As you get into the moment a grouse thunders out of the brush, scares the be- Jesus out of you, you drop your gun onto a sharp rock, and you can hear the grouse laughing away into the sunset. That’s why a composite stock is so perfect.
Nope. It's my OPINION that you cannot buy a good O/U for $600 and you would be way better served getting something else. If he gets 50 answers that say "save your money and don't buy a O/U for $600 and instead get a pump" and 2 answers that recommend a "Guatemalan brand X O/U," that's valuable data for him to make his decision. Is it your opinion that an 870 is an over under?
You guys gotta realize that you sound like stuck up snobs when you tell a guy he shouldnt buy what he wants, but instead buy something totally different that YOU think is the best use for his money. The whole $1500-2500 o/u for bird hunting or you are wasting your money is the most stuck up high horse crap that is ever said on this forum. Its worse than fly fisherman saying you are wasting your time fishing with a rod under $600. Or golfers saying a set of irons under $1000 are unplayable and a waste.
Be respectful to others and answer the question the guy asked. He asked for an over under shotgun, not your opinion on if a $600 over under bird gun is worth buying.
That should have been your answer to start with .... THEN ...if he ask give him YOUR recommendation...It's my OPINION that you cannot buy a good O/U for $600
That's what many have done in this thread and are being criticized for it.That should have been your answer to start with .... THEN ...if he ask give him YOUR recommendation...
I don't blame the OP for not showing back up ....
I agree completely with you. This is why threads often end up with one hundred plus answers - of which about 5 actually addressed the questionRegardless ....it is still NOT an answer to his question....it is just more opinions....
Why can't folks honest when a person asks a specific question ....he did NOT ask what was the best "shotgun" for less than $600 ....BUT he asked the best O/U shotgun for less then $600 .... Is that something folks can NOT understand?
If you can't answer the question that was asked, you should simply not reply. Or if you are going to suggest an alternative, at least provide an answer to the question... "IMHO the best low cost O/U is brand XXX and here's why. Since you're new to hunting, you might want to consider a <INSERT YOUR FAVORITE ACTION TYPE HERE> shotgun and here's why."I am new to this forum and to shotguns in general so sorry if this topic has already been discussed but I was wondering what the best low cost o/u for upland bird hunting is, I don’t want to spend too much more than $600.
This was the original question ...I don't see any part of the question that ask about other type shotguns ... just O/U...I was wondering what the best low cost o/u for upland bird hunting is, I don’t want to spend too much more than $600
Nope. It's my OPINION that you cannot buy a good O/U for $600 and you would be way better served getting something else. I would want that when I ask advice for any subjective question. What I wouldn't want is bad advice. The whole point of even asking advice is so you don't make a mistake.
When I was a kid, the Ithaca Model 37 was the Cadillac of pumps. You do not say what your upland hunting is...but, I would consider a good used pump like the Model 870 or Model 37...and forget the triples.
