I am a big fan of using the full payload range that a gun and gauge is capable of. If I like a gun, I may want to go from 3/4oz to 1-1/8oz, depending.
That being said, I do like a 1oz or 9/8oz lead load in the 16ga. It's all psychological though... for 20 years, I had only 2 guns: a Model12 16ga from one grandfather and an 11-48 28ga from the other grandfather. Both had strong memories and meanings, so I did 7/8oz and below in 28ga and used the 16ga mod12 when dove were being jumpshot further out.
16ga:
1oz 7.5s, remington hull, old waa16 wads. 1200fps
9/8oz 6s, rem hull, waa16 or sp16 wad. 1150-1200fps.
Newer, 1oz 7.5s in cheddite hull, ch209, sg16.
Steel: 410gr 3 steel, Federal hull, 1430fps or so.
If I started loading for skeet 16ga, I would do 7/8oz 1150fps 8s, cheddite ch209, sg16 or dr16. But I have 20 flats of the old Herters 8s left from their closeout...
Nowadays I have a ton of cheddite hulls, so I use straight wall wads: sg16 for 7/8oz and 1oz. Sg16s for larger. Or the z16 for 9/8oz. BREAK THE TABS BETWEEN PETALS! I haven't tried z16 myself yet, my buddy does.
I have all the old Hercules and Alliant manuals going back to 80s, and they have 40x more loads than the 3 or 4 Alliant gives today. I also have all the Alliant powders, so use greendot or Herco or Unique for my 16ga loads, right from their manuals. I use BPI advantages or LOTW from BPI for cheddite 16ga.
Also have 2000 or more loads from 16ga.com data, can't recall where they have it stored now. But tons of cheddite.
