problems with my pump shotgun

I just got a new shotgun (new to me, but it is well worn), it is an Ithaca model 37. After you fire, you cant cycle the pump back to get to the next round. You can pump it freely, cycle shells through it freely (as long as you dont fire them), and you can dry fire it and cycle the action like there was a round in there. You can also insert several snap caps and run them through flawlessly. I took it apart and cleaned and oiled the gun. Nothing is loose in the gun, the pump and the slide are both very solid feeling. Any thoughts???

The only way to get the stuck round out of the barrel, and break the action free is to drop the butt of the gun on the ground. Then the shell ejects and the next one chambers flawlessly. There are several auctions on ebay for replacement parts... Should I try that, and which parts should I buy?

I have tried federal and winchester. Both were similar target loads, 2-3/4 inch light target. If I take my thumb and press up on the fireing assembly, that also unjams a shell... :? I have broke it down and cleaned every part several times now... I'm starting to get discouraged!!! :x

I think it would be cheaper in the long run to send it to Les and have him break it all down, clean it up, lube it up, replace any springs etc. that need replacing, and repair the problem you are having. Every penny spent with Les will save you down the road. By taking it to a UPS distribution center, not a Mailboxes, Etc. type place, it only cost me about $15.00 to ship it to him. N/E Ohio to Ithaca, NY. You won't be sorry, especially as you had indicated it was an older gun, which probably needs what Les has to offer. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

This may be a stupid response, but....I remember using those winchester 100 round a box walmart shells for trap in my double and on several rounds the plastic hull split up the side (not really noticable) but it expanded enough to make it near impossible to break open the action. Did you notice that with any of the stuck shells??

I have 2 Ithaca 37's, one from 1946 and the other from 1975. They have bee absolutely reliable in feeding, extraction and ejection.

The model 37 has 2 extractors one each top and bottom. Ejection is mechanical with no springs. It is doubtful that replacing parts will fix your problem because you say that the only time it doesn't function properly is when a round is fired.

Because it only happens when a round is fired I suspect that the chamber has or had corrosion and is rough. My first step would be to clean and polish the chamber. If that doesn't fix the probem then I would send it to Les and let the Ithaca expert fix it.
