Anyone have any great techniques for getting out of a slump? Lets see... in "Bull Durham", didn't Kevin Kosner had his pitcher put his underware on backwards... Or was that "Tin Cup?"

bel_dad, One technique that works well is to review what your shooting tendencies are. If you keep good records of your good and bad outings at the range, this is the time to review them and be honest with yourself. Let's say your past tendencies are:

1.) leaving without the target
2.) taking your head off the gun
3.) coming back without the 2nd target on doubles.

First and foremost, taking a good look at your setup when you get on the station. If you use a checklist, be deliberate about it next time you practice, now relax and tell yourself to move "with the target" or "let the target show me where its going", or something like that. Shoot a few rounds like this, doing everything as deliberately as possible - but be sure to relax (after all, this is practice and we;re just trying to find a way out of a slump - that's all.)

If your scores show no improvement, just work your way down your list of tendencies. If all is well, like Jim says, you'll be saying "what slump?".

Another important point, don't change or revert to doing more than one thing at a time differently. You'll know it when you come across what is causing your problems. If not, its time to work with a good coach for a couple of sessions. We've all been there - keep the faith bro.

I guess a slump could be devided into 3 catagorys????????
Basics error
Mental error
Leed picture error

Wonder if I'm measuring the distance between the bird and the barrel again... I have a tendency to look at the gap, not at the bird.

Bel_dad;

I just got back from a tournament a few minutes ago.

They shoot .410 first, got an 88 (missed 5 High 1,s  )

High 1 has given me fits all year, but :) I finally figured it out today. I am shooting way under that target.

For some reason I thought or saw that I was on, but in reality I have been shooting with too much daylight between the bird and barrel.

Bottom line is it is something basic, that will come to you eventually in time. Then it is like a revelation when you figure it out.

By the way, got a 98 in the 20ga.

Hit them all...

Nice shooting Clarence!

I shot 20g in a "open" event today (100X1) out in Terrell. I'm loath to admit it, but I shot an 83. Think I will take some prozac and go to sleep! Well, I would if I had some prozac, but I'd probably miss my mouth...

I missed one of everything. Even missed H7... Twice. Missed L8 3 of the 4 boxes... if there was a bird that flew, I missed it at least once. Now that's a slump worthy of being in!

Well, Terrell was great anyway. Out in the country, beautiful range, nice people, great food... even got a nap, the only thing I was missing was... ah... 17 targets.

Its not fun when I realized I missed more targets today, than Fairbank will in 4 years...

Best to you,
Bel_dad

Tuff time of year to beak a slump. Best way to beak a slump imho is to walk away from the game for awhile. Ever notice how the problem target of last fall is no problem the next spring? When you come back from the break, it's fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals.

Mid season is tuff time to walk away. But you might cut the practice, and just work on diligent execution of fundamentals at serious shoots.

I`d have to say that is the advice I`d accept. Walking away for 3 or 4 weeks may help. I had a VERY bad week at work and just rode down to the range today and watched for a hour or so...and left. Talked with some good friends and really enjoyed that. I knew there was no way my head would be in the game so why waste ammo? And pick up bad habits. I think you can shoot TO MUCH!

Can't walk away right now, I'm in a league and won't let down my team mates more than I already am.

Well, I'll shoot with the usual suspects tomorrow, think I'll switch back to 410 and see how I do.

Seems like this slump started when I was sick and got realy, realy weak. Perhaps if I do some push ups, run a bit... I think it's entirely possible I've made this gun to heavy for me right now.

All good advice.

Here's a bit more. 83% got me the 'low shooter' award a few weeks ago at the club. After a stressful week or two at work, getting to the range, etc--just seemed like more work.

1.Started working out with free weigths and then a 100 gun mounts.
2. Paid more attention to set-up.
3. Cleared my mind of work stuff and focused on each target as it was thrown.

No magic--and scores are back up as is the enjoyment of shooting skeet.

I didn't know Hamlet was a skeet shooter!

William Shakespeare - (from Hamlet 3/1)

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?

Bel-Dad - nobody can tell what's happening via internet. I would hazard a guess that if you are spraying the lost birds everywhere, we are talking about a fundamental problem most likely in the area of;

- basic physical technique...watch that you aren't trying to arm swing the gun...use your body, keep your shoulders level, etc.
- not looking at the bird. There is NO middle picture. Either you are looking at the bird intensely or you are not looking at the bird.
- Mental game, shooting defensively and not being positive and aggressive will kill your scores and manifest itself in all sorts of ways...like checking lead (not looking at the bird), leaving on your call, and swinging with your arms/rolling shoulders, and other strange contortions that when I do it I look like I have a neurological problem  , etc.

I would suggest (within your resources to do so) getting out there not for rounds of skeet but for practice at individual stations. Start out just like we start newbies, at the end stations. Be aware of your set up routine, work on the physical technique (we don't break birds, we execute a technique and the result is the bird breaks), shoot with aggression and then start to move station by station to the middle. Re-build what you know, i.e. that "if I hold here, look here, use good technique, and shoot here the bird is dust". Get somebody to pull for you and give yourself your own clinic...you remember the lessons that you were given, dredge them up and consciously practice them.

As far as going to 410 to relieve a slump...I don't know, that's like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer because you have a headache. Do you think you flinch from recoil? Me, I like 28 ga when I want to work out some problems.

Best of luck

Baron, a great post... I'm probably doing everything but lifting my head or leaving early. But have had problems in the past with arm swing, and looking at the gap.

Funny thing was, I really thought Sat would be my day. I couldn't shoot today because of water on at the range... (But the Catfishing was great! You could fish right on the road. :? ) Shot a couple of stations Friday, but was confused because I would smoke some, then miss... then smoke 4-5 then miss. No consistancy...

I have always liked the 410, and it does seem to let me see what mechanical problems I have develped. And quite frankly, think I would have scored better Sat with it.

Think for league I'm going to shoot 28g not the 20 I was going to shoot. Seems the 20g shoots 3-4 inches higher than the other tubes, and I don't shoot a high shooting gun well...

Going to be interesting to see if I can pull it together for League... at least we don't shoot one of the top teams this Mon, and if I shoot just half way decient, we should win. I might ask my team mate if he will let me shoot a round with us both using his k80 just to see if I have made my gun to heavy for me.

Thanks,
Bel_dad

Try breaking the target in differsnt spots. See how long you can take it then see how fast you can break it. Take a few steps closer to the house to help with your reaction time. Shoot a few from the hip or opposite handed. After doing stuff like that you will be very happy to just shoot a regular target with your head on the gun. Just my personal ideas, nothing textbook here.

ShootingStar;

My fix was not that simple.

I had to turn them inside out, then put them on backwards

Hit them all...

With our 4H kids, I use the fundimentals
1. eye on the rock
2. head on the stock
3. follow through
4. lead
and most of the time the problem is one of the above assuming the basic's are good (foot position, hold point...). Funny thing is, that is the correct order of importance and error, AND most of the time it is eye on the rock....vision...you must focus hard the target every time. Little Johnnie can see the target...YOU must focus hard on that bird...big difference! Make sure your eyes are still, locked down in one spot before you call pull....don't be sky scanning. Lower your barrel a bit, see it, THEN go shoot it.

Sometime the mo you miss, the harder you grip the gun...don't gorrilla grip the gun...relax and just be smooth. L7, L8 close your left eye...it can be that simple! You need to get back to one bird at a time, if you know what your score is while you are shooting, you ain't thinking about shooting THIS bird...think about what you are doing right now, not what is in the past. Get outta your own way!
