Trap is primarily a 12 ga game. You can shoot it with a 20 ga, but you will be at a disadvantage, and all the other shooters will wonder "why is that newbie doing that?"

For birds, a lot of hunters like the 20 ga because the guns are usually lighter and easier to carry, and they are big enough for most birds but the 12 ga works fine and is more versatile.
