went grouse hunting for the first time this year and for a change i got the better of these damn birds. we started out with a double for the first time in my life three birds got up after my springer went in on a wonderful flush i dropped one and my father dropped one of the others. not a true double but i will take what i can get. the only thing that went wrong is a but a nice little ding in the stock of my new ruger red label 20 gauge. oh well! thats what the guns are for anyway. we flushed ten different birds i'm guessing some were flushed more than once through . any way looks like it could be a good grouse season this year in wisconsin.

Those are just love marks.
Sounds like you had a great day. Actually any day in the woods with Dad is a pretty great day. That goes for kids and guys like me that are staring 40 in the barrel.

Those little dings are just character marks. I would gladly trade a ding on my gun stock for a day of grouse hunting like you had ANYTIME because every single ding would mean another great hunting memory. Enjoy!

When you get to where you dont even notice the damage you inflict on your gun. Then its broken in...

Until then you are wasting time and energy worring about it. Just let it happen. Heck I saw Jeff throw that new Browning in a field of mud and stomp into the ground. Says it makes it shoot better and he wont worry about damaging it any more, must be an Oregonia thing...

When you ding your beloved firearms there is usually a very strong emotional response which fixes that moment in your mind. Kind of like how you can remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the space shuttle had blown up or when President Reagan was shot. In psychology they are sometimes referred to as "flash bulb" memories.

When I buy a used gun that has a few dings, I always ask the owner how and when each ding happened. I rarely get an "I don't remember."

I just call the dings on my guns "History."
