Whats up the the 396 as far as quality goes. I always though they were just a fancy peerless but have been told lately they were much better. If you were to compare them to a current O/U what would you compare them to quality wise. I have 3 3200s and a 300 Ideal if this helps. Are they maybe a double version of the 90T. Thanks.

I asked the local dealer and he seems to think a good majority of the gun was made by Kolar. Seems like he said that about the 300 also so may not mean much. Any inputs appreciated.

Your dealer doesn't have a clue, or is trying to sell you some guns.
When I was at the Remington plant at Ilion NY in 1996 when the Peerless and 396 were in production, I was told that they were made at Ilion, not by Kolar.

Thanks for the info. Thought that might be the case. I won one in an on line auction and was just wanting some info on it. Got it yesterday and shot it in a compact shoot today. shot a 82 and was in 2nd when I left. Not bad for a B shooter I guess. Hard to get punches up here cause usually one shooter under the five requirement for a class punch. Again, Thanks.

From what I've read online the 396 is a wonderful gun. It was essentially a custom shop gun. The 90T was a Kolar gun, perhaps that's where your dealer got that line of thought but the 396 was all Remington. I've seen a few for sale online for $1500 or so and I think that's probably a good buy for what you're getting although I'd probably buy a Browning or Beretta instead if you couldn't find one for less then $1800.

I got the 28" and I'd say between 95-98% closer to 98 though. Looks wise a definate 98. the only thing would be the opening lever is just past the left of center, so must have been shot some. Have been told for around $300 I can get new locking lugs put in though. Have league tonight so find out if sunday was a fluke or not.

Driggy,
The 396 is based on the peerless design but was assembled in the Remington Custom Shop. It is a good solid gun. I had the 30" barrels and it was a dream to shoot.
I would order a peerless top lever spring for just a few bucks before I spent more money on locking lugs. You might be extremely surprised. The guns are easy to adjust with the set screws inside the receiver.
If you decide to have further work done I would not get anyone but Laib's to do it.
regards adn enjoy your new gun!

Thanks for the info. What does the peerless spring actually accomplish? Also any insights into the the set screw adjustment would be nice. I didn't get any manuals or papers with the gun so only can go by what I remember from the peerless I had several years ago. Since you know about Laibs, how much is the normal charge to get a 3200 updated. I have a low SN field gun with crackes in the fore-end. Again Thanks.

"What does the peerless spring actually accomplish?" It will most likely cure your top lever problem and bring it back just right of center.

Contact Remington at 800-243-9700 and they will send you a manual and I think they are still free.
