Hi guys, i have a question. I have an oportunity to buy Remington 870 marine magnum, but i am confused about which version is the one that's available to me. It looks like this (bottom photo). It has rifle sights, so i wonder if this isn't a slug barrel? What are the differences between police and regular marine model? Does marine with rifle sights have cylinder bore or other choke options? Is the trigger assembly polymer or aluminum? I just want a regular cylinder bore. If there are option to use chokes, even better but if there is a fixed improved cylinder bore instead of cylinder, then i don't know about it. I'll have this for range shooting and home defense mostly.

I appreciate the answers.

It looks like it is a smooth bore yes, but is that improved cylinder fixed like a regular cylinder? Because if it's fixed and can't be changed to cylinder than i don't get a full spread i want for SD. As for those "rear" rifle sights, they don't make a lot of sense on a smooth bore shotgun. Those things really bother me, so i'd greatly appreciate a help from those who own this model. I wouldn't want to regret a purchase. So far i am choosing between this model and a Mossberg 590 Marine. Tough choice.

At home defense distances, I would not worry about CYL vs. IC. IC may be a little more accurate with slugs.
Just ask the seller what it actually has.

Nice. How is it with reliability? Then i will probably pick this model over Mossberg 590 mariner. I hope i'll make a right decision. I've heard alot of bad stuff about newer Freedom Group era Remingtons, but i hope Marine magnums stayed the same quality.

Thanks again, have a nice weekend.

I just purchased a new one 870P. Its cylinder not improved, smooth bore. Has those rifle sites, I could take or leave. The trigger group is metal not plastic, and the extractor is non mim. Its been good so far probably 200 rounds through it with no failures. My wingmasters are smoother. This feels like its basically a nickel plated express with a few better parts.

All Right... Way to go... On the Bolt Lock-up... I'll check mine when I get home... Looks normal but I'll see if I can get a picture of mine for you.

I did get my new Police Barrel in and tested... I did also replace my (mim) extractor with the steel one but yours looks steel for sure...

I just started loading for 12ga btw and is going well... Lotsa fun...

Thanks

Just checked. Gap = normal.
Now go run 500 shells through it.

Cool. Sou you can push forward and back the forend in the forward lock position for a tiny amount (the difference in the bolt-chamber gap is shown on my two pics) on yours too? Then it must be designed this way on purpose.
I will sure break mine with some 3" nitro turkey magnums, 000 buck and high vel slugs. Can't wait :)

Thanks for the post, i appreciate very much.

I am checking my 870 Comp. (Early 80s high end trap gun) The other 4 are further in the safe.
Yes the gap is there. The barrel goes all the way through to the bolt.
Yes I have a tiny amount of wiggle (front to back) when locked.

Thanks. I'm guessing they made this way on purpose so that some thicker rimmed shells (usually from european makers) can be fired without FTF.

So, today i went on another range session with my new 870P, i've shot 50 rds of 00 buck, 25 rds of slugs and 10rds of 3" buck. All went fine. But then i went home and cleaned the barrel, (it wasn't that dirty) and when i looked at the muzzle under the room light, i've noticed this strange grey and black spots. The barrel is clean of residue, so that must be something else1. And the shotgun has less than 150 rds through it. What could these spots be? Is that normal? Btw it only shows under the lightbulb or flashlight, not under natural daylight.
