I am 71 and no longer like to carry my 1963 Belgian Browning 12 gage O/U. I hunt only quail and dove..............may tune up with SK and SC. I am interested in the Browning 20 gage Synergy in 28". I put this in the Browning forum but want all opinions. Thanks, slopoke

Welcome slopoke!

I'm sorry, I cannot comment on the Cynergy 20ga, but if you're open to suggestions, the CZ line of O/Us in a 28ga will fit the bill nicely for Skeet, SC, dove, quail, and lightweight 28 frame.

I have several friends who shoot them and I have handled theirs. Very nice in my opinion.

Just tossing out an option for you.

May you have many years left of shooting fun. I only pray I see 71 and can still shoot. I have 31 years to go.

Take care.

Well I'm kinda in the same boat, and my 1963 Soperposed seems to be gathering a bit of dust. I went to a Beretta SP-S 20ga, and even use it for waterfowl. The big difference between the two guns is the location of the hinge. While the Browning hinge is a cross pin below the barrels, the Beretta uses lugs that are at the centerpoint of the bottom barrel. This really reduces the size of the action.
I found the transission from the Browning to the Beretta quite easy.

The Cynergy does not use a cross pin below the barrels. The action is smaller than the Beretta. Get a tape out and measure them if you don't believe it. The 20 ga. Cynergy is a great little gun, I think you will love it.

I like the fact that the Cynergy stock can be easily modified for LOP. Reliability is very important to me too. I was on a hunt with friends that shoot auto-loaders recently. They all had at least one malfunction. I have never had a malfunction with my Browning O/U....since 1963...even with shells I loaded. What's your opinion on ported barrels. I don't normally use ear protection in the field. Thanks.

I didn't know that the hinge piont was a factor in designing the action as to size.

My RRL 28 ga. has this system where there is a boss on either side of the receiver with recesses milled into the barrel and I thought that was a weaker way to make the gun and considered it to be a minus rather than a plus.

I will say that the 28 RRL is one of the trimmest and handiest guns I have ever held in my hands and I selected it over the Citori because of that, even though I think the Citori may be a little better gun.... :D

Anyway, what is the track record for this type of hinge arrangement?

Guess it would be possable to design it a bit smaller. It's 3/16th of an inch on the Beretta from bottom of the barrel to the bottom of the reciever. This would place the hinge lugs at the outer most edge of the reciever tho'

I'm not a fan of them, I just don't see where there is a benifit on a shotgun. I really don't know if porting would keep me from buying a gun or not tho'

Like yours, the only time my Browning o/u has ever missfired was when I forgot to put shells in it.

I plan to give my present Browning to the man that owns the land where we hunt.

The Field grade Cynergy comes without ports and is considerably cheaper than the Sport version. It looks like they use a less expensive tube system and less expensive wood. It can also be had with 26" barrels which could be an advantage with quail in the bushes.

I'd like to hear from anyone who owns a 20 Synergy. Thanks.

My father is your age and faced the same problem. I bought him the best light shotgun out there, IMO. The Beretta Whitewing which is sold for $890 right now at Dick's Sporting Goods. It is awesome. Check one out.

I have a Beretta SPII in 20 gauge that is by far thee lightest shotgun I have ever fired. Really an easy gun to carry and the 20 gauge has plenty of knock down power for pheasants, chukar and dove. :)

Also, if any of you former Superposed shooters need a place to store your guns, I still have plenty of room in my safe.

I was planning to buy another Browning because mine has been so reliable. I would not rule out Beretta however. I looked at their website. The Whitewing is not listed. Have they been discontinued? How much does the Whitewing (26") weigh? Reliable? Thanks.

The Whitewing I think went out a couple of years ago. The White Onyx would be the closest thing now.

If you want to stick with Browning, take a look at the Citori Superlight Feather. Great guns and very light, available in both 20 an 12 gauge.

The lightest O/U I have handled is the Yildiz, which weighs about 6.5 pounds in 12 gauge. It uses an alloy receiver with strengthening inserts. It's imported from Turkey, comes with 5 chokes and is only sold through Academy Sports & Outdoors stores in the South. Price: $386.

Check out the Yildiz forum for more information.

I have a Turkish gun....... I just shipped it back to the manufacturer for warranty work after shooting just a few boxes. I would not recommend a Turkish gun. They are akin to the early Spanish guns..... they look OK on the outside, but they are quite inferior otherwise.

Both Beretta and Browning make light guns.

I called Dick's in Jacksonville today (closest store) ready to buy a Beretta WHitewing 20/26. They did not have one and were too busy to check the other stores. I'll try again on Monday unless Santa should surprise me this weekend. Slopoke

The place where I hunt quail has a lot of mesquite trees. When the quail flush they can get behind a bush quicker that you can say jack rabbit. I think the short barrels would be just a little bit easier to point in a hurry. Thoughts?
