I bought a slightly used remington 11-87 and I noticed a few spots on the barrel, I tried to clean it but they won't come off is there anyway a novice like myself would be able to sand it down and re-finish it or just buy a new barrel?

Use 4 alt steel wool and some kind of oil, Kroil if you can find it. Otherwise let it soak in the oil for a while and then scrup with the oiled steel wool. The rust should come right out, it won't scratch the finish either. If your gun is the rough parkerized like finish then there isn't much you can do other than the above but it rarely works 100%.

Bill is right, I have used this trick myself and it is amazing at how well it really works. I use 0000 steel wool, and "the more used" it is, the better. After I have used it for awhile, it gets kinda icky-oily, so I keep a chunk in a zip-lock bag in my gun toolbox.
