I've been reloading 20 ***** AA hulls for a couple of years with no problem. Lately probably 80% or more of my once-fired hulls are unuseable due to lengthwise splits from where the crimp begins down for 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. Mind you, these are new ones that I fired for the first (obviously) time and they are useless. It's nothing I'm doing, because I haven't even reloaded them yet. Anyone else notice anything similar? Maybe it's a bad batch of hulls or something, I dunno, but I'm tossing out hundreds of hulls that I should be able to reload. Thanks for any advice or input in advance -

I have seen the same thing at our range here on the base. Many of our shooters have switched over to the Remington STS or Nitro shells because of this and other problems that they have been experiencing. One individual has even sent an e-mail to Winchester in protest about the drop in shell quality. I think that it is a teething problem with the new hull configuration and that they will sort it out quickly, but that is just my opinion. Try the Remington shells and see if you like them better. Good Luck ---AFG

I agree . Winchester has obviously changed their plastic configuration. One of our club shooters asked the Winchester people about it at the World last year and they were completely ambivalent with a "don't care" attitude to which he told them he wouldn't use Winchester anymore. Start shooting the Remington STS and you will get more and better reloads.

I've seen a lot of this splitting with both 20 & 12 ga Win AA's in the winter for the last 2 years. The cold seems to make it worse.

Winchester does make the new HS hulls in 20 and 28 gauge I use Remington STS hulls in 20 gauge because the AA's split way too easily after the first couple of loads and have not tried the new HS AA's but they do not use the AA data there is data for the AAHS at www.hogdon.com
The STS's work best for me in 20 gauge target loads the Cheddite 20 gauge hulls hold up well for my 1 ounce feild loads.
The 28 gauge AA's outlast the STS's for me I dont know why.

Sad as it may seem......When these splits show up and cut-offs around the top of the brass happens....it means the factory is trying to pump up profits by increasing the ammount of regrind plactic in the hulls. If you have read my posts concerning factory attitudes you will understand. Any field man that has the "I don't give a d*nm" attitude should be given his walking papers at once. I would have fired him on the spot. There are times a factory makes an honest mistake! It's the field man that picks up the problem at ground zero and has the option to send it all back for replacement. That's how the consumer builds trust in a product.
My suggestion is buy some other product.....the factory will get the word! Forget brand loyalty! Best Regards, James

I experienced the same problem with AA20's last year. I would lose about 6 or 7 hulls to splitting per box of factory loads. I should have followed up with Winchester about it but I never did. However, when I purchased 3 boxes of AA28's and found that the unfired shells were allready split at the crimp, I could not ignor the problem any longer. I contacted Winchester about the problem and they arranged to have the unfired shells shipped back to them for analysis. In return, they sent me $40 worth of certificates to replace my defective shells. I am happy to say that in my case, Winchester did care about keeping the customer happy.

This problem with the 20 ga Winchester AA's splitting has been going on for about 3 years.
