This is more of a general gunsmithing question rather than a should I question. I have a sxs and was thinking of adding some chokes to it.

My question is if the barrels are already lets say improved and modified how does adding a choke help? will it? I am assuming that the barrels taper from one dimension to the smaller dimension over the entire barrel. Is this correct or does the barrel taper only in the last couple of inches? If the taper happens over the length of the barrel can one get any effect from a wider choke, say going from improved to cylinder or will the choke be unable to widen the pattern?

I guess my question really is how is this operation preformed?

Thanks in advance.
