Well I was able to remove the dimples - I tried the socket method first which did not seem to help much so I got out my dremmel. Worked GREAT! My only question now is about the bare metal. I am thinking it will be much easier to start rusting. I am wondering if there is anything I should put or could put on the metal to help prevent this (besides a good layer of oil).

Sounds good - I know I have a ton of black paint laying around I can use. Any suggestions on how to make sure I get all the oil off the area before I paint it?

Also - any suggestions on a good paint to use? I am thinking it will rub off very easily with shells sliding over it, wouldnt it?

Clean off the bare metal with rubbing alcohol then give it a coat of fingernail polish..
black if you can find it but clear will work fine.
After the polish dries give the spot a coat of oil and go shoot! :)

Open the bottle or tube and apply. :p :p

Get some G96 or Birchwood-Casey cold blue, degrease all the bare metal and apply for 3 - 5 mins, rinse and buff lightly.
