Best gun cleaning mat you'll ever need

I usually clean my guns on the coffee table in the living room. I put down an old towel on top of the table, this wasn't cutting it anymore. I looked at the official gun cleaning mats at Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc and wasn't impressed.

While at Walmart yesterday, I went over in the kitchen section with the cushioned kitchen mats. I found the perfect gun cleaning mat. Its made of Vinyl, and is about 1/4 inch thick. Its 20''x45''. It can be rolled up easily after being used. Best part, its only $10. I would much rather clean a gun on top of this surface than those cheap felt like gun cleaning mats.

This looks to be perfect for temporary cleaning that I do, or a permanent table top mat in a garage for cleaning.

Does the goop soak through? I purchased one of those 'official' mats and was disappointed that the solvents would soak through, regardless of what the label on the package said. I reverted back to a full size bath towel, folded a couple of times lengthwise to 'stem the flow'.

It doesn't, its a very rubbery material with no penetration. It will hold water if need be. If I have excess oil on the mat when I'm done I just wipe the mat down with a paper towel and roll her up.

Nice find, but I think I'm more impressed with you being able to clean your guns in your living room. My wife won't let me do that anywhere NEAR the inside of the house. Luckily I have a workbench in my over sized garage. I make a terrible mess when I clean guns.

I'm not married.
That explains it...cleaning on the coffee table was the thing about your post that really jumped out at me. {hs#

I use a 1/4" piece of plywood scrap I had left over with some felt pulled taut and stapled in place. When the felt gets too gnarly, I replace it with some more (I have a large roll leftover from something from years ago. The wood is about 36" long and when done, I stand it on end next to the vertically stored gun cases

Use one of her Yoga mats. She will never know the difference.

If you're single, stop by a Yoga studio and ask one of the better looking gals if you can have one of her Yoga mats to use as a gun cleaning mat. If she thinks it's kindof cool, you may score twice.

This mat still working out well for you?

Was considering buying a 16" x 54" Tipton Maintenance Mat (http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.com/tipton/catalog.asp?family=firearm-maintenance-mats) but see no reason to pay almost double for a gun-cleaning specific item. Only issue might be fluid absorption. More convenient that the Tipton mat absorbs oil and solvents where the Walmart vinyl mat would require paper towel cleanup.

I use the 2x2 absorbent pads we use at work for cleaning up spills. They abosrb oily things really well and are a nice padded thickness on top of my workbench. Afterwards they also make a nice firestarter.
