Anyone have an opinion as to the best shotgun for high volume shooting. This would be for dove shooting in Argentina, 1,000 - 2,500 shells a day. I have tried 1100's (wouldn't cycle the Mexican Remington shells), 11-87's (OK, but inconsistent and needs constant attention), and a BPS (worked great but it nearly beat me to death). I also shot with some guys from California or New york or something who were very proud of their shiny new Beretta's but their guns couldn't handle the dust worth a damn. These were all 12 gauges. I am thinking of going to a 20 gauge and maybe a pump. I have been disappointed too many times by automatics that jam up. Only problem is I had my 870 jam consistently with remington cheapo 3 inch 2's, I had to borrow a Benelli Nova pump which fed that junk flawlessly.Any opinions welcome

The Nova handled the junk so why not that one? It comes in 20 gauge as well. www.benelliusa.com/nova_pump/
If I was going to be shooting that many shell per day, I would take a long hard look at a Browning Auto 5.As much as I like Remingtons, I've never seen a gun stand up to high volume shooting like an Auto 5. Just my 2 cents worth. Edited by: bustabuck at: 8/12/02 10:08:38 am
I am considering a Benelli pump but could do without the added recoil associated with a pump. when I last used a Benelli I was shooting 3 inch 2's at snowgeese and you can shoot 15 per person in Maryland. The 10 of us almost got our limit. I don't normally mind recoil but when you shoot by the case the less recoil the better.I have an old belgian made browning humpback but have never really taken a liking to it. I once shot a round of skeet with a model 50 winchester in 12 gauge and then borrowed a friends humpback to shoot the next round. I was shocked at how much more noticeable the kick was in the A5 and it was a 20 gauge.If mike is suggesting using a 410, I do not believe thay have either 410 or 28 gauge shells available. bah!! recoil reducers, i see almost as much use for them as a laser scope on a sawed off 12, i figure if someone can't handle a gun the way it was made, then get something else, half the physical fun of shooting is feeling the "kick of power", the other is keeping the barrel steady while you aim, i mean no disrespect to anyone, but i feel a man should not need any assistance is making shooting easier, i was brought up under old school shooters, "always trust iron sights over scopes", "never waste 2 shells if only 1 is necessary", and "shoulder bruises heal, in time never re-appearing" just my thoughts guys...
I'll have to agree with you on that cD. While I've never had a recoil reducer installed on any of my shotguns, I've heard great things about them. Of course, recoil for me isn't that big of a problem. (I'm 6'3", 240lbs.)I have had the forcing cone lengthened and the chamber reamed on a few of my double barrels. It improved the patterns greatly and also reduced the felt recoil a good bit. Sort of an added bonus.
Hey CD, when was the last time you put 1,000 - 2,000 shells through a shotgun for 4 days straight. Well the last time I did it my 1100 folded up right away and I was left with a BPS which kicked like hell. Cliches like the ones you are referrring to aren't much use in a situation like that.

actually i put about 1500 through a few couple of weekends ago, used a friends collection, he wanted to test all of his old guns he had in the attic, put 300 into a old sure-shot 30" full choke, metal butt-plate, anyone who has fired one can vouch for the kick it gives, when you shoot as much as most of us here, the meat in between your shoulder and your chest becomes hard as rock, you don't even notice it anymore, we got a saying up here, " when your shoulder gets itchy the only thing that satisfys is a few dozen clays " Edited by: cD Tanthalas at: 8/21/02 10:25:05 am

bustabuck I am with you. I will take the Auto 5 by browning anytime. I have never had one to jam if handled and cleaned properly. I have seen them not function because some idiot could not read and didn't understand that friction is necessary to make it work. The took the gun down and oiled the heck out of the magazine tube and then put the spring back on and reassembled. It kicked like a mule and didn't function properly. One other place that will give you problem if it doesn't have the proper lubrication and that is the spring that goes back into the stock. It need to be oiled lightly and cleaned occasionally. If is isn't,. then over time, it can make the gun jam. To me the best gun that has been made for my purpose which is hunting is the Belgium or Japan made Auto-5. I have used one for over 40 years and just wish i could find a woman as dependable. If I do, then I am going to marry her tomorrow. Are Over/Under's out of the question? I have a friend that competes statewide in Trap. We did some figuring the other day and calculated that he had shot 45,000+ times with his Beretta 682. Over an 8 year period it's been in the shop twice. Once for a 'tune up' and once for pin on the bottom barrel. That's pretty impressive. Chevy and Ford need to take some lessons from them. I have been to South American several times and only used Browning o/u. I used the same one 85% of my shooting. Never a single problem, just clean the barrel and wipre it down and your ready for another 1,000+ rounds the next day.
Why would you even think about using an automatic? You are only asking for problems. Plus loading that many shells will make your thumb raw and sore.
A pump? I know I don't want to pump 1,000+ rounds a day.
Bereta is a fine o/u as well, I just prefer Browning.

You want an O/U or SXS with auto ejectors if your going to fire that many shots in a day.
An auto will need to be cleaned and you should have some extra seals ready (depending on the gun).
If you use a pump you won't be able to straighten your pump arm by the end of the day. This could be a problem if you have to go to the can really bad :roll:

OK...let me get this straight....
you are gonna shoot up to 2500 shells a day....ok...for simplicity...let us say you will hunt ten hours a day....that is 250 shells per hour....or 4.16 shells per minute...you cant do .16 of a shell...so lets be conservative and say 4 shells a minute average....is dove hunting down there that hot and heavy? Or are all you guys just plain crazy and gluttons for punishment?? hehehe.....I just don't get it..... :roll:

I've seen pictures of Argentina dove hunts where the shooter was standing next to waste high piles of empty shells!
They shoot down there!
Do a google search on "dove hunt argentina" and see what comes up.

·it seems to me that most gas guns would require frequent cleaning to remain operational for that duration. putting that many rounds through one with out frequent breaks for cleaning and lubrication would seem like asking for trouble. on the other hand shooting that many rounds might make you appreciate the inherent recoil reduction charachteristics of an auto.
If it was me i would probably stick with my o/u, just because i know it is up to the task. I've been shooting about 4 cases of shells every weekend for about the past 6 mos between trap, skeet, and sporting clays, and my beretta 682 has digested them all without a hitch. that's about 26,000 rounds in a 6 mo period with zero problems, and recoil is next to nill.

I agree with the comments on the Browning A-5. Use mine for some nasty duck hunting and it never misses a lick. But, I think it would wear you out in Argentina. I took two Benelli 20 ga. to Argentina and they functioned perfectly. And they won't kick you down. As far as loading and your thumb, my bird boy loaded one gun while I shot the other.My trips were with Trek.
