I've often thought about this question. Hate the idea of them laying around for half of eternity as a result of our recreational "requirements". Hopefully someone here will have some answers that might benefit both the environment and the conscience.
Depends on the area. All the junk hulls we pick up off the range goes to the recycle center. They really like the cardboard the rocks come in. I don't know how they sort them, I've not taken them myself, but a friend does it all the time.
If anybody knows of a use to recycle shotgun shells I would like to know. We put a lot of them in a dumpster. The only use I have been able to find is some company did an experiment using them as 'fuel' making steel, they were mixed in with the ore. I haven't found any commercial use.
My sister figured out how to recycle them. She melts a hole near the crimp with a hot paper clip. Then she runs a 2 inch wire through the hole and bends it in an "S" shape. On the face of the hull she paints a face - Santa Claus, reindeer, snowman, whatever. Sometimes she spray paints them white before the artistry. Look really cute hanging on the tree. I don't think she can utilize all 3 wheelbarrows full of empties I've got though. I told her she might try to sell the idea to someone - - in China I suppose! Wit aside, they really are neat and I have one of just about every shell mfgr. hanging on our tree. My wife is gonna keep the neices/nephews outta trouble over Christmas vacation by letting them paint a few empty hull ornaments.
I throw them in the recycling bin and let them sort what they can use/not use.
I do try to imagine the look on the face of the city contracted recycling employee when they open a box containing 100's of worn out hulls.
They ought to be able to use the plastic to make park benches and gun racks for us???
