Well, the fees are ridiculous, but as for the seat-belt laws:
In Canada, don't you guys have tax funded healthcare for everyone? Well, I imagine the price to fit a seat-belt wearer with a neck brace for whiplash is alot less than reconstructive surgery on someone's face and a full-body cast because they forcefully exited out of their vehicle through the front glass. And auto accidents are a major or the highest (statistics anyone?) cause of injury in any industrial nation. Less cost, means less tax hikes or money spent on other, more useful things. So, from a utilitarian standpoint, making people wear seat belts is better for everyone, not just you.
Whether I actually believe what I just said is a mystery, just something to think about.
