Long story short, this was my great grandfathers gun, passed down 3 generations and now belongs to me. I've fired 1000's of rounds through the gun, worked great, but I moved and loaned the gun to my uncle who while out shooting dropped it into a slew, sortof cleaned it off and then threw the gun into a case for 2yrs

Anyways, I got the gun back, rusted to hell, took it all over the place and everyone said sell it for parts it's garbage. Eventually I found someone who was able to restore the gun to this condition shown in the pictures. The problem is the mechanism doesn't seem to work nearly as smooth as it used to and doesn't feel right to me.

Before the gun performed flawlessly, now after the restoration it works... ... but you really have to break the barrels hard for the firing pins to work, tearing the gun down doesn't feel as smooth... I just don't think it's operating as it should.

I posted pic's on another forum and recieved comments about the position of the opening lever being as far left as it is when closed that the gun is in need of some parts that are worn out. And I was told since I live in Canada to try and find someone by the name of Nick Makinson to check it over for me. Is there anyone who knows how to get ahold of this man or someone else qualified to check over/repair the mechanisms in this gun?

I live in Calgary Alberta Canada

Problem is I can't remember where the lever sat prior to me loaning the gun to my uncle. And when it was returned to me the gun was rusted so badly when I put it back together (it sat rusting dis-assembled) the mechanism wouldn't even attempt to close. On the LC Smith forum a couple guys told me that that opening lever was designed to wear to the left and thus it's probably just wore out, but I'm not sure and that's why I'm trying to find someone in Canada who knows these guns like the back of their hands to check it over for me.

But like I said, at this moment the gun doesn't feel right to me. And I won't be going out shooting with a gun I don't feel comfortable with

Thanks pheasntguy for the info on the place in Ontario, I guess I'll give them a call in Feb to see what they suggest. To bad they weren't based out here in Alberta

Also I hope he didn't put those barrels in a tank. It may be the photos, but that doesn't look like rust blue.. Bushrod
How do you tell and what's wrong with it if he did? I'm new to this whole restoration thing and haven't got a clue what the difference is

Well, over the Christmas holidays I took the gun out and the left barrel hardly ever fired but the right one seemed fairly consistant.

This gun definatly needs to find it's way into the hands of someone who can tune it up properly. Anyone else have any idea's who?
