Cheddite Primers

I am currently using 28 gauge AA hulls with Winchester 209 primers, Universal Clays powder, with Clay Buster wads. I can purchase Cheddite primers for $5. a box cheaper than Winchester 209 primers. I can't find any load data for 28 gauge Cheddite primers in 28 gauge AA hulls. I was told "There all the same " just use Winchester 209 data. I dont feel safe on those words alone. If any one has data in print or a web site I could refer to I would fell better. Any information on these primers good or bad is welcome also.
Thanks again.

I don't like the Chedite primers because of their size. They are a little larger in diameter than the Win209 or Rem209P and once you use them you can never load one of the others in that hull again. I only load 12 gauge at the moment and don't know anything about loading 28's, but with the 12's changing the type of primer can cause dramatic changes in chamber pressures due to the different burn rates of the primer. I would only recommend using the published load recipes as they have been proven to be safe. Sorry that I can't be more help.---AFG
Hodgdon has some 28 gauge loads with Estate Cartridge Inc hulls using Cheddite primers.

I have seen the ETI hulls on Ebay at times.

Good Luck,
Bill
CORRECTION

Hodgdon has the loads for Cheddite hulls. Cheddite supplied hulls to ETI before the Federal purchase of the company. ETI indicates that there are three types of ETI hulls out in the world. One was supplied by Cheddite. One was a ETI design and the last was a Federal hull. The Cheddite has a plastic base wad. The Federal has a paper base wad. I am not sure what the difference is on the ETI design.

Good luck,
Bill
I've got data from most everyone under the sun and I forget which one it is that says to use the Winchester 209 and the Cheddite 209 interchangably. I have, and it is accurate information. I use them after a few shots and the primer pocket gets a tad loose. Then the Cheddite is the perfect fit. For all intents and purposes MY experience with them in 12, 20, 28, and .410 is they are the same as the WW 209. At least my chronograph and patterning board can't tell the difference, nor can I! If you do use Cheddite in AAs or such, you are stuck with them, 'cause they will strech your primer pocket a bit and now the Winchester, RP, and Fed will be loose. Not bad primers at all!

re cheddite primers tests show winchester 209 1.63 tons psi chaddite cx 2000 . 1.71 tons psi chaddite the most consistant blue rock
Cajun:

The Estate hulls are made by Chedite.

I was told the same thing about the primers (Ceddite) being slightly over sized.

If you use Cheddite primers and are using AA hull, to me, you have just ruined the AA hulls.

Component swapping

You may want to read this article from Skeet Shooting Review. The author does some actual tests on the effect of different primers, hulls and wads on pressure generated.

The link is sometimes kinky but it will connect eventually.

I used Cheddites and then switched to Winchesters with the same hulls with no problems.
i have, for spite gone back to the sts rem primer, but i like the FRENCH cheddite primer, and when i get over it i will go back to them. i shoot o/u's, and cheddites rule in these guns. i have not noticed a size difference as far as not being able to use other primers once cheddites are used. cheddites may be interchanged with w-w 209 info. i have probably used nearly 200k cheddites, and have had 100% success with them, in all four tournament guages.
I have switched to Noble Sports primers because of the price difference. $79 a sleeve vs. $100 a sleeve for Win,Fed,Rem and $90 or so for Cheddites. The Hodgdon manual states that Noble Sports are interchangable with the Win 209.

Actually i credit Winders for this:
I challenged anyone to find a 3dram eqiuv or less load that would become dangerous if any standard (non Magnum) primers were switched, and by God, Winders did it! (Good Job Scott)
On the Hodgdon website load data:

STS Hull
1 1/8 oz Win 209 WAA12 18.4 Clays 1200 fps 11,300 psi
1 1/8 oz Ched 209 WAA12 16.4 Clays 1145 fps 10,600 psi

Substituting the Cheddite 209 in load #1 with the 18.4 grs of clays would probably push pressures quite a ways above SAMMI, They'd still be fine in my 3.5" guns with a SAMMI of 14,500 psi,but would be over in non 3.5 guns.

The cheddite/win primer switch isn't identical ballistically in all cases.

that is why i like 7k-8k psi loads. for my needs, it does not matter about swapping out stuff. i find the highest pressure load, and know i can swap. for a full throttle screamer, you need to recipe the load exactly. another reason i load light in large ga., recipe in small ga. the differences in shotshell components is maddening.
The 3 Dram example i cited isn't what you'd deem "full throttle" by any means. You'd have to be at a Win209 2 1/2 dram X-Lite load or so to have the cheddite primer substitution be ok in the cited recipe.
I had problems with cheddite primers being punched through on some. Never had them make the primer pocket bigger. Went back to Winchester and they fit just fine in AA hulls. Cheddites weren't that much cheaper than Winchester primers, so I quit using them.

Have never had a winchester primer punch through.
Not to mention that they are made in France! The frogs wont be getting any of my hard earned bucks(if I can help it) untill after the attitude change. We pulled their buns out of the fire twice in the last 80 years and all we get for it is a brushoff? Come on guys, where is your brain?
I quit using them as well, for both the reasons k80jr and driller cited.
I've still got a couple thousand to shoot up before I replace the fireing pins in my Rizzini. They have indeed eroded the ends on them from piercing Cheddite primers. Last WW 209s I got I paid $85 for 5000. Hard to go wrong there!

I've had to replace firing pins from using them as well,
not worth it.
