When using various published load recipes...does the type of wad to use be my primary concern to ensure the proper patterning at the distance that I will be shooting? Or...is it more important that I use enough powder to achieve a certain feet per second speed to get my pellets there on time? Or...is all this mental calisthenics even necessary if you are shooting a 12ga for skeet only?

I believe you can get good loads with whatever name brand wads you have available localy and with many different numbers of powder. Do a bit or research in your area and find out what is available to use in whatever hull you are going to have and find a recipe for those components for a load of arround 1145 to 1200 fps with either 1 or 1 1/8 oz of #8 1/2 or # 9 shot. If you are on'm that day they will break, if not, they won't, and it won't be because of your loads either.

If you are going to be doing alot of shooting, or even kinda alot, go with a 1oz load, or even a 7/8oz load if you are brave. Less lead in the shell=less recoil....I am about to experiment with a 7/8oz load, I think I can do better with them than with a 1oz load.

i think powder/wads/choke are the most important. my wingmaster patterns well with 1oz waa12sl but loosens up with r12l
somtimes i even use a pc post. i'd try to pattern different wads, couple up close and some out far. standard 30"/20' circle. that outer ring needs to be full and even.
least it will get you out of house again
