De-skunking--What do you use?

1455 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  rembrwn
I am in the process of de-skunking two GSPs that got too close to a skunk this AM. I have washed both with PetSmart de-skunk shampoo--did a fair job but I am still trying to get collars cleaned. Are there any surfire methods to get the smell killed on the first go around?

Equal Parts Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar works pretty well, mix it up in a tub, then I'd follow that up with a good ol' fashioned tomato juice bath. For some reason the tomato works well once you've knocked the initial STANK off but if you start the process with Tomato Juice it's not quite as effective.

I think what happens is, the STANK has a few chemicals in it and is very oily almost gel like. If you use the Peroxide/Vinegar it breaks down the gel then once that is gone the citric acid in the tomato juice breaks the oil left over from the gel.

Just my 2/100 of a dollar.

Good luck brother this happened to me on the last day of quail season last year at 6:54am. That was the last thing he retrieved for me last year. GOOD BOY!!!!
One other thing Gene, Don't be askeered (scared for Yankees) to throw on some baking powder in their kennel, blankies, general dousing.

Guys, thanks for the advice, I will use it--I am leaving tomorrow for opening day of the KS pheasant quail season and need to get it killed as much as possible. Fortunately they have crates in the back of my pickup so won't be riding up front with me.

Baking soda, peroxide, and a Dawn dishwashing liquid. Mix this up to a thin paste and massage it into fur. Let is set for a few minutes and then wash them good.
In addition to the baking soda, peroxide, dish soap; woman's douche works wonders in this situation. I've used it several times on dogs and the smell is cut to bearable levels immediately. It is also an easy to carry item that doesn't take up much space. Tomato juice has not been overly effective in my experience, a buddy's dog had a skin reaction to tomato juice and developed a rash that took the dog out of service for a couple of weeks.
P.S.- with the peroxide, etc mix, DO NOT mix it up before hand. The ingrediants will react to pressurize the container causing it to "explode" and spray the contents all over. Leave them seperate and mix if or when needed.

My dog came in contact with a dog that sprayed and he still stunk pretty bad (they were wrestling and rolling around on eachother). I did a dawn-baking soda mix and that worked okay but what really got that final stank off was "clairol herbal essences" (the original scent) and it worked really well but be sure to really, really well and let it soak-in for about five minutes and rinse really well.

live2: your post made me chuckle :D

toss him in the river, no, im just joking, theyll come back to you, im just kidding about that to, but, you should have drawn down on the skunk from the hipo
This happened to me a couple years ago last day to hunt dog finds skunk thinks its a cat only dont taste as good. We tried vinegar didnt work so we loaded them in the back of the truck (reason why I wont own a suv) drove faster than the smell. Traffic stayed back also. Stop signs and lights were hell. We wake the wife up trying everything in the house. Personally I think it was the cat laughing at the dogs woke her up. Well she goes in the tack box(we show cattle) gets the Corvis its a special soap for washing cattle get the cattle version not the horse. Difference is if it says horse they double the price and the cattle is stronger soap. 2 washes and you couldnt smell anything. We keep it with when hunting and wash them in the pond or river now but it takes the scent away.
Your vet might have a de-skunk smell formula that comes in a spray bottle. I used it this last fall and it works great. Just spray on and rub it in a little. In just a few minutes the smell should start to go away. This way you don't have to wash the dog and get both of you wet. And if you're in the field you don't have to wait to get the smell out.

FWIW
