Sunday - chased and shot some quail, toured RedStick properties north end, drank some beer and a little Woodford Reserve

Monday - chased and shot some more quail, toured more of RedStick properties, ate a fine knock-off of a Turducken - a piglet stuffed with venison backstrap and bacon and piglet backstrap. Oh yeah, drank some more beer and Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek

{hs# enjoyed having you and Curtis for a couple of days! We found a few birds in the hot weather and had a great time just hanging out! Iam so glad Curtis came back and wrapped up the season with Trixsie! The oysters, pig, fish, etc were good....and so were the libations! Enjoyed having you guys again John! Curtis got him a few birds for the freezer, and you didn't even mention your 43 yard shot on that quail with the 28 Dickenson yesterday either!!!!
I'll get to all that in a separate post - just wanted to answer Mailman's question

Working on a new set of kennels the past few days.

Those are going to be outstanding - glad to see you got the roof on. I guess getting Curtis and me out of your hair let you get back to work.

Riflemeister, I actually caught one, accidentally, in one of those traps with peanuts. The problem is, how do you approach the trap and dispose of him without you yourself becoming 'Stinky?'
Call Animal Control? Game Warden? Forest Ranger? Skunk Rescue?

I spent a lazy day watching a marathon of Jesse James movies, in chronological order starting with the 1939 classic, "Jesse James" starring Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda. A couple of Abita beers made the really corny ones a bit more palatable.

Shot my first round of SC for the year after work. As a 3-4 times a year shooter I usually shoot in the low to mid 60's and that's exactly where I was today, 60. I look at some of the scores that others sometimes post and I have to wonder if I'm really that bad of a shooter? Or is it just a tough course that I shoot? 8 of us today and the high score was a 61, my 60 and 3 guys in the low 50's and a couple 40's. I know none of us are world class shooters but I don't think we are a complete waste either. Granted shooting a limited number of times a year doesn't help but you'd think someone would get lucky once in a while and post a score in the 80's. Oh well we have fun regardless.
There are valid reasons you don't see me posting my clay shooting scores on here. Most sporting clays courses have degenerated from replicating bird shooting to "gotcha" presentations where the terrain, trees and anything else is used to confuse the shooter into shooting where it isn't. Sounds to me like you came in a close second with a bunch of experienced bird hunters. Not too bad.
I absolutely suck at sporting clays. Fun, I mostly shoot with my brother-in-law when I go up north, so 3-4 times a year at most. I agree with RM - many SC courses are set up for the Herb Parsons and Tom Knapps of the world. In the field I have good days and not so good days (there are no bad days in the field). :D But one thing is for sure - I seldom suck as bad in the field as I do shooting "teals", "fading midis", "speeding minis" and whatever else the trap setter tosses out there.

Hey now, I had a whole lot of fun and entertainment with a Red Rider back in my youthful years. Probably shot what seemed like 100k through one of them. :!: :D :D :D

Sooooo....you've always been this way, cdb???!!!
Yep, ever since my grampa first took me hunting, I would carry his empties, and keep track of what he got with each shell, and he very seldom missed. If I could shoot half as good as he could, I would be one hell of a wing shooter :!: :!:

I say the same about both my Dad and my uncle who learned from their uncle, who grew up hunting for sustenance. Different times.

FWIW - I don't recall seeing you miss very often.........

Picked up a Atlas 250 Tri Axis Wobble trap today. This thing is sweeeet! Tried it out at a couple of locations this afternoon. You can check a video out on my Facebook page also. Hopefully some of you guys can try her out this fall if not sooner!

Those things are sweet! Sooner it is - as soon as your Wingshooter is out of rehab..... :D

Electronic ignition is used in the GAU-8 30mm Gatling gun used in the A-10 and some other systems, M-61 20mm Gatling gun used in most fighter aircraft and some other systems, and the 7.62mm mini-gun - all used by our armed forces. Electronic ignition is an efficient way to get rates of fire up to 6000 rounds per minute. Of course multiple barrels helps too. I had never heard of small arms built for electronic ignition. Leave it to Remington

Electronic ignition has been around since the late 1950s for military use in the various versions of the "gatling gun". The M-61 Vulcan was first deployed on the B -58 Hustler as a radar guided tail defense weapon. It is the standard gun in all US fighter aircraft since the late '50s. The Army had track mounted versions of the Vulcan for air defense and I'm sure there are other applications of the weapon system.

FWIW, ammo handling requires a bit of care - I've seen 20mm rounds set off by static electricity. That potential would bother me a bit in a personal rifle.

I guess some Remington engineer just thought "why not" in small arms.

**Late Report**
Sunday was eventful. Slipped away in the afternoon and caught a couple of fish, and avoided the cottonmouth. Rode 41 1/2 miles. Got home and learned the Gamecocks had finally won a ball game. JER, your Aggies are the best team we've seen this year. Congratulations!

I watched the game - maybe the most frustrating baseball game I've seen all season. Errors, errors, errors!!!

This is probably the most "fun" forum on the site. I don't own a Huglu, but you people seem to have your priorities straight :)
BTW I don't own a Huglu anymore myself but there's nowhere else on SGW I care to hang out. Great group of folks here and it just doesn't matter if you own/shoot Huglu or not. {hs#
I agree 100%!! I still don't have a Huglu, but I really appreciate that you guys just don't mind if I stop by the the forum and chat a bit.
The more the merrier. All the chatter here isn't all about Huglus, or even shotguns. Things like M&P Shields fitting in a Mexican Loop holster, whiskey and cigars, coffee, football and other such non-shotgun talk are a staple around this joint. Just like the local bar where you like to stop in occasionally for a beer. Good stuff :D

I played in the golf outing fundraiser for the domestic violence shelter/methodone clinic my wife works for. All told they raised $23K today. I'm not a big golfer, today was actually the first time I've swung a club in two years (the golf outing was rained out last year). But there are four of us that just go out and enjoy ourselves.
That's the best way to play the game. From the book and movie The Legend of Bagger Vance - "Golf is a game that can never be won, only played".

I nearly ruined golf for myself seeking a single digit handicap index - the effort took all the fun out of it for me.

Sounds great, Mailman!! :)

I recently shopped at a Cabela's and a Bass Pro Store. BP was higher by $1 or $2 on many comparable items. However, every time I asked for staff help at Cabela's, they had to look up stuff on the computer. BP staff just showed me where merchandise was located. Definitely more impressed with their service!
I think service and employee competence varies from store to store. I've had good and bad experiences at Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Cabela's, Academy, and Dick's. I don't even bother with Academy and Dick's any more.

Great experience with two shotgun purchases from Cabela's, but a bad experience picking one up at the new Cabela's Outpost store in Augusta. I found the service at Cabela's in Rogers, AK to be outstanding and the one in Elgin, Illinois to be absolutely abysmal.

Had a chick in the gun department at GM here in Albany tell me the reason they were out of 20 gauge #7-1/2s was the duck hunters had bought them out. On the other hand, I found the folks at the GM in Valdosta to be very helpful on more than one occasion.

The Bass Pro shops in Macon and Savannah are great to browse - I love the layout and decor. But finding someone who actually knew something about the smokers I was interested in was impossible.

All three are sometimes great, and sometimes terrible. None of them pay well enough to attract and keep the best and brightest. My local GM is almost completely staffed by part-timers who just fill in where they are told on a given day. It all just depends on employee dedication and turn over.

Golf never interested me at all. I always thought if you gave everyone a ball and a club, fired a starting pistol, first one through wins, you don't count strokes, it might interest me. My theory is if I'm going to walk that far, it'll be trying to bag some sort of critter and preferably chasing after a bird dog.

I had a nice visit to Alabama. Drove down Sunday and returned Wednesday. tbeaux has a new 9 week old female German Shorthair that is a dandy. The pup is absolutely fearless and is already pointing birds, retrieving them, swimming in the lake and retrieving thrown sticks, and attacking every big dog on the place. Quite the girl. I got to put Bode on one of the remaining bobwhites and finally shot a bird with my DeHaan 28 ga. I'm now 100% on bobwhite with the gun, one bird, one shot. Tried finding wild pigs to hunt, but despite spreading corn around the day before, they were no place to be found. We did see turkeys, deer, coyotes, racoon and a fox. Several covies of bobwhite were seen that had chicks in tow. Other than 26 hours of driving, it was a fine time.
Golf has been called A Good Walk Spoiled by author John Feinstein. Others have called it a spiritual endeavor when played well and truly - Golf in the Kingdom and The Kingdom of Shivis Irons by Michael Murphy. It's not for everyone, but since there's no bird hunting this time of year, and since I don't much care for the local gun club, and since I've played at golf since I was 10, following my dad around the golf course using a hickory shafted mashie that was my grandfather's, it's what I do in the off-season. I love the game, now that I've realized I will never be a scratch golfer.

Looking forward to heading back to Alabama in the next month or so - when tbeaux's Wingshooter is released from rehab. Can't wait to see the new pup and try out that new wobble trap, share a few brews or maybe some good Woodford Reserve and some good ole fashioned bull sessions.

Been there, done that, I agree. I went in 1981, right before I left Dayton for San Antonio. Never even thought about going back.
