I took Rebel to 4-B's this morning for his last bird hunt of the season. I had them put out 6 chukar for him and he did a great job if you don't count the one he pointed on the far side of the field and then laid down while I hiked over to flush the bird. He did get up when I went in to get the bird up. I hope that wasn't expressing an opinion about hunting with a 74 year old guy.

I arrived at the clubhouse at 0745 and then looked at my watch as I put chukar #6 in my game pouch and it was 0830. In 45 minutes I exchanged pleasantries with everyone, drove to the field, Cat planted the chukar, and Rebel found, pointed, and retrieved the 6 chukar I shot. Kinda like speed dating chukar. I think both Rebel and I were on our game today.

I'm in the middle of re-tuning a Weihrauch HW50s air rifle. The procedure is fairly simple, but the moly grease used to 'lube tune' the innards makes for one messy job. Definitely going through a couple pairs of rubber gloves before I'm done..................the Mailman

Went trap shooting on Friday. Shot some experimental loads I made up out of some of the 500 NOS clear Cheddite primed hulls given to me. The "brass" on them was tarnished and the plastic is a bit dull so I know they were old hulls. So I tried using up some PT1210 wads that I purchased some time back, when BPI was out of PT1205's, hoping at the time to figure out how to make up some 7/8 oz shells from these 1 oz wads. Didn't work out. Then BPI discontinued the complete PT line of wads and so these things need to get used up. Figured I'd load up a few and test the freebie hulls and so I loaded a few of the clear Cheddites with the full 1 oz the wad was designed for and added a couple/three to my vest to try out. Don't know if I misread the load data or if the old primers are off, but every one of them sounded like a poof when shot.

Shot some of the same wads in Remington Game Club hulls were they are 7/8 oz loads and do work quite well (with new primers) and smoke birds from the 16 yd line. Best part of the day was the large box full of picked up once fired Gun Club hulls from policing the field when we were done. I also got a few Federal Red White and Blue top gun hulls that I might save for trading material when I get enough for someone that loads them.
Sounds like your Cheddite hulls were straight wall and your Remington hulls were tapered. The straight wall hulls need a larger diameter base on the wad to properly seal and prevent powder migration past the wad. I got in a hurry one evening and loaded some 20 ga Windjammer wads in some 16 ga hulls to shoot skeet with the next morning. Big time "POOF" on all those shells although I did break a few clays while salvaging the hulls.
The PT series of wads are for SW hulls, but BPI had a few listings using them in STS or AAHS hulls. In the Cheddite hulls they are more like 1 1/8 wads and I wanted to try to put some undershot filler to reduce the shot volume. Didn't work out too well.

In an effort to add to the post count, I will state that I am in the process of trying to sell my 2005 Chevy Colorado truck and buying a 2016 Chevy Colorado with the 2.8 liter Duramax diesel engine. I will use the money I sell my current truck for to pay off the loan on my wife's GMC Yukon before taking out the loan for the new Colorado. We have a family camping trip planned in Ohio the first weekend in July and faced with the prospect of a 1500 mile round trip at 10 mpg in the Yukon towing our travel trailer, we decided that instead of waiting until the end of the year for the new truck that we could swing getting it early. Others who already have the diesel Colorado are reporting 18-19 mpg towing around 5000 lbs. My travel trailer is only about 3500 lbs. so I hope to see 20 mpg on the trip.

If all goes well, I hope to have the new truck by June 1st at the latest. That will give me a chance to break it in and put at least 500 miles on it before towing with it. I still have to get a new title for my current truck (can't find the title and don't think I ever had it but that's an entirely different and long story unto itself) and clean it up before advertising it for sale. Then after I sell it and pay off the Yukon, I will have to see what's out there on dealer's lots. There are only 19 diesel Colorados within a 250 mile radius on cars.com right now. There are also 18 diesel GMC Canyons in that same radius. Being that they are still relatively scarce, I probably won't get my choice on color but that's ok. They come in either a crew cab shortbed or crew cab longbed. I want the shortbed for the added maneuverability of the 14" shorter wheelbase but then again the extra 12" of bed space would come in handy. If it comes time and I find a smoking good deal on a longbed, I won't rule it out. Once the process is complete and I have the new ride, I will get some pictures posted of it. I will also give a report on how it does towing my 3500 lb travel trailer on our camping trip when the time comes.

RE: short bed vs long bed -- I've found that the turning radius on my 2015 Colorado (crew cab, long bed) is comparable to that on my 20015 Canyon (crew cab), even though the 2015 is at least a foot longer. IMO, the extra 12" of cargo space is more than worth any perceived improvement in maneuverability you would get with the short bed. So far, the only downside of the 2015 is that it takes up more space in the garage.

I hear you on the availability issue. When I bought mine, there wasn't a dealer within a 450 mile radius that had one equipped the way I wanted it (4x4, crew cab, long bed, gray leather, 17" wheels, sliding rear window, without the Z71 package, ...). I ended up ordering mine from the factory. It took about two months before I got it, but the upside is, I got exactly what I wanted, and couldn't be happier. Hard to believe it's been nearly 11 1/2 months since I took delivery.

Thanks for the feedback on longbed vs shortbed. I do think the longbed looks better. My thinking on the shortbed was that it would be practically the same as my current 2005 Colorado so the learning curve of getting to know exactly where and how to place your vehicle in a tight space where you can't see everything in the mirrors would be shorter. I also thought it would make backing the travel trailer a little easier although from what you are saying that advantage might be negligible.

I am also on the fence on whether to get a 4x4 or not. My current truck is a 2wd with the locking differential and I get around just fine most of the time. There is always that 3-5 times per year that I wished I had 4 wheel drive though (like when I arrived at the forum pheasant hunt this year and parked in the muddy spot!). The diesel will be heavier up front than my current gas engine so I'm not sure if that will affect the 2wd traction that much or not. If I go with the 2wd then I definitely want the shorter wheelbase of the shortbed. If I get a longbed it will be 4x4. The problem is that I am at the upper limit of what my budget will allow and the difference in monthly payment between 2wd and 4x4 is about $100 per month. It's hard for me to justify a vehicle payment of $100 more per month for something I will use 3-5 times per year. My wife already has the 4x4 Yukon if we really need to have a 4x4. The smarter economic decision would be to get the 2wd but the lure of the 4x4 is appealing.

I took Bode to 4-B's this morning to hunt chukar on the last hunt of this season. I had my buddy JD shooting while I worked Bode, assuring he was steady until the birds flushed. Everything went well, even getting to hunt a couple of the birds twice when JD failed to put them down. One bird Bode pointed just ran when we tried to flush it and it ended up hiding under Bode. He stayed steady until I pushed it out behind him and then it was curtains for Mr Chukar. Looks like Bode's hunting for himself has been solved and I actually got to shoot a couple of birds over him with no problems at all.
