I did!! For the first time in a couple years I went trap shooting. After about a 20 year lay-off four clubs are getting together to revive the Hangover Trap League. I shoot for the skeet team at one of them so what the heck. Today was the first shoot and happened to be at my club. There's a total of eight shoots, two at each club, and a shoot-off. $2/week/shooter goes to prizes, so I don't think many ringers are going to spoil the fun. All four of these clubs are just around the north end of Seneca Lake from me. Three are within 10 miles and one I've never been to is maybe 30 miles down some beautiful country roads. I hope spring gets here because the top-down Mustang is ready to roll!

I don't think I ever posted a pic of my home-made custom trap gun. I found this in a little Mom & Pop gun shop when I was killing time at the Waverly NY Auto Auction. Paid $200 NIB never fired. It's the Nat. Wild Turkey Foundation raffle gun from 2007 made by H&R. I put the custom pad on with a spacer for some extra LOP, not a bad do-it-yourself effort, if I must say so! I added some serious weight in the stock, those H&R's kick like mules! Got a hammer extension, an IM choke, and I load really light 7/8 oz. loads.

First station today I missed three birds, then nailed 18/20 the rest of the way. I kinda forgot how to float the birds. Ended up with a 37/50. I'll take it. I had a blast!.........................the Mailman

Nice doubles, Leftie. I really like the 12, she's a beauty.

I just installed a new muzzle brake on my HW50s air rifle and zeroed it. I'm more and more impressed all the time with these precision German AG's. I took off the front globe sight and installed the brake and it changed the POI by about an inch at just 10 meters. These guns can be very picky about ammo as well as how they're held and rested when shooting. I've been enjoying the time in the Mancave getting my trio in synch. This summer I plan on setting up a bait 'n shoot range off the back porch with house flies as the target at 30'. What do you guys think would be the best bait, strawberry jam or Shih Tzu poop. I've got plenty of both............................the Mailman
Took a friends son out to scout for turkey's this morning. He was showing me their land and I believe all the gobbling got him hooked. Can't wait for the season to start and to call in his first bird
Me and two buddies shot 2,970 rounds of ammo today, we started at 10 AM, and finished at 6 PM. :D :D Had a blast.

I gotta ask, seriously, cdb, with all the bangbang you do, what do you wear for ear protection? I wear electric muffs when I shoot clays (I like to hear what's being said) and some solid plug-ins when I'm doing rimfires by myself. I had my hearing checked a couple yrs ago and it was fine for my age, even though Mrs. Mailman disagreed with their findings............................the Mailman

Don't worry, selective hearing is a time honored marriage survival technique.

I use Radian, molded plugs for shotgun shooting, and electronic for handgun, and rifle shooting. The muffs hit my gun stock, and interfere with my shotgun shooting.

A couple buddies have those ear-doctor-molded-custom-fit plugs and say they're great. They should be for the better part of $250!!! Another guy puts a pair of those throw-away foam plugs in 'gently' and then puts electric muffs over them and says that some high roller ear doc he used to shoot with said that combo is the best.

I think I'll go with what I've been doing. You see, the voices in my head have said they MUST be heard!!!!!.......................the Mailman

Did you stop and open the door???
No sir, that's a private duck club across the street from some public land we train at. I'm out in the Pacific flyway, so though it seems like a lot of birds, it's nothing like the light geese migration through the Midwest.
I do follow a versatile training regiment for him (NAVHDA) and he has gone out on a duck search and found a number of wounded birds for me the last 2 season though (usually I dispatch them, and freeze em' for training later that year). I find it funny when folks tell me that shorthairs shouldn't swim when they were originally bred to do so, and the only thing that will keep my dude out of the water is me during the colder months.
When trap singles shooting yesterday after getting a call that our Friday get together at the gun club was moved up a day due to rain predicted for today. Shot 50 more shells through the '08 DeHaan SGR O/U with one light strike on a new Federal pink shell was the only problem. Shell went off the second time and all 50 shots were out of the lower barrel. I've not kept a running total of shells through the gun, but it has to be in the many thousands. Wind was whipping in strong gusts, but my scores didn't suffer from it, just from my usual lack of concentration. Got all the far left birds from station 1 (hardest for a lefty), but missed straight away's from station 3 etc etc. Argh!

Note: the Huglu DeHaan has never been repaired, but will get a rest as soon as I get my Verona forearm back from being repaired. The DeHaan will get the wood stripped and refinished in oil vs. the POS poly finish. 2008 was the year of crappy poly finish on SGr's and mine has chipped and can be peeled off with a fingernail in places. Time to give it a new finish.

The Verona forearm wood is held to the forend metal by 2 small screws in the rear radius of the iron. The heads popped off both screws and so need to be replaced. Over hardened or just a dumb design? Upon each firing the gun wants to go back toward your shoulder and your hand is holding the wood. Wood wants to stay in place and that putting the recoil onto these two screws each firing. Former factory gunsmith wants to put a 3rd screw in the front of the iron and add a metal reinforcing "button" in the wood up there that this screw passes through. I think this will be in the middle of the checkering on the wood and could look out of place. We'll see when it comes back from the gunsmith in NV. Either that or I need to purchase a batch of spare replacement screws for the existing locations.

Good news of the day was coming home with more once fired Gun Club hulls from the guys that don't reload but do shoot Remington GC's.

tbeaux, of the topic a little, .............. How did they deep fry the quail we had Saturday night, any seasoning, and how long did they fry them for? Also (temp).

cdb
I get to shovel snow again today! Nice April Fools prank on the part of Mother Nature. Only about 3 ", but, still, it's been Spring up here for a week - ice is off the lakes, it's even greening up a little. I still have 2 weeks to Turkey hunting, so it'll probably snow again for that.

We use Zatarins Chicken Fry, lightly salt and pepper before. Deep fry 3 1/2 to 4 minuets @ 325 degrees

Since it's opening day for the only team, playing the only game that really matters, I did a couple of annual rituals. First I got out the beautiful Boston Redsox golf ball marker that Mrs. Mailman gave me years back and put it in my pocket where it will be carried until the final out of the 2016 World Series, or until the Sox have played their last game this year. Which ever comes first? Then I trudged out to the front yard through probably 3-4 inches of fresh snow to drop the stars & stripes from my flag pole so I can proudly fly my Redsox team flag. Somehow it doesn't look quite right, waving in the breeze with a winter wonderland in the background!!..........................the Mailman

Well, I had an old bridge crack, so today I got it removed, and a new one ordered, and a temp put in
