I did!! For the first time in a couple years I went trap shooting. After about a 20 year lay-off four clubs are getting together to revive the Hangover Trap League. I shoot for the skeet team at one of them so what the heck. Today was the first shoot and happened to be at my club. There's a total of eight shoots, two at each club, and a shoot-off. $2/week/shooter goes to prizes, so I don't think many ringers are going to spoil the fun. All four of these clubs are just around the north end of Seneca Lake from me. Three are within 10 miles and one I've never been to is maybe 30 miles down some beautiful country roads. I hope spring gets here because the top-down Mustang is ready to roll!

I don't think I ever posted a pic of my home-made custom trap gun. I found this in a little Mom & Pop gun shop when I was killing time at the Waverly NY Auto Auction. Paid $200 NIB never fired. It's the Nat. Wild Turkey Foundation raffle gun from 2007 made by H&R. I put the custom pad on with a spacer for some extra LOP, not a bad do-it-yourself effort, if I must say so! I added some serious weight in the stock, those H&R's kick like mules! Got a hammer extension, an IM choke, and I load really light 7/8 oz. loads.

First station today I missed three birds, then nailed 18/20 the rest of the way. I kinda forgot how to float the birds. Ended up with a 37/50. I'll take it. I had a blast!.........................the Mailman

Ordered a new 16 ga Rizzini today. Going to go 16 gauge for a while. Got a ton of once fired hulls from a friend.
Sweet! I just got another tote of boxes of paper shell 16's. Love that gauge! And an unopened case of western 410

I broke down and got a part time job at the local sporting goods store. I now get paid for talking hunting and fishing.
I've considered doing that after I retire from my day job. My biggest concern is that I would spend more on guns, hunting/fishing equipment, etc than my paycheck.
I've thought that to be my ultimate retirement job, too. I'd probably not last long, though; I'd be recommending mounting low powered variable rifle scopes, in low rings, on 7mm-08 class caliber rifles. I suspect the profit's in selling magnum rifles fitted with optics suitable to view the Rings of Saturn to guys that don't need 'em  .
I would love to have a seasonal summer job at Sportsman's Warehouse but I don't believe they hire seasonal workers.

Sitting in the Salt Lake City airport trying to get home to Arizona from a six day trip to Miami, Fl for a long over due family reunion. I say "trying to get home" because we fly standby, for free, as our son is a pilot with Skywest, an affiliate of Delta. Right now waiting to see if we can get on the next flight to Phoenix.

No, but they hire part time. That's what I got.

Thanks for the info. The problem with that is I split my year between 2 places about 160 miles apart and I still work full time in the summers. It's a seasonal job that runs from April through October. Something to think about in the future though. :D

Made it home on the first flight out of SLC to Phx after we landed. Super lucky as there were 2 no shows that opened seats for my wife and I and my son rode the jump seat in the cockpit with the pilots. :D :D :D
Found out how to get a break from work (but I didn't need it). Got another detached retina and have to stay home for two weeks. I'm supposed to keep my head down for 5 days and thats worse than waterboarding. The clock goes tick.....tick...tick.. Makes time seem to go slower than when I was married to my first wife.
That's no way to be burning time off. Hang in there, and get well.

Try becoming the commander for your local American Legion post, Chief. I took over that position last June for our local post and that's been keeping me too busy to spend too much!
Shot some trap and skeet with a buddy from work. 2 rounds of each. The first round of skeet I shot with my CZ Mallard and hit 21. The second round I shot with my relatively new Mossberg SA-20 and didn't do as well. I lost count after 6 misses but probably shot a 15 or 16. That was only the third box of shells I had put through that gun. Based on this outing and the first outing with it where I shot 2 rounds of skeet, I definitely shoot the CZ O/U better. The SA-20 has a thinner wrist and thinner comb on the stock and it doesn't feel as good as the CZ. It's also lighter than the CZ which doesn't help with follow through. Then there is the fact that I have put better than 7,000 rounds through the CZ and only 75 rounds through the SA-20. So gun familiarity is working for the CZ as well. The SA-20 was bought as a backup/loaner/bad weather gun anyhow so I hadn't planned on it replacing the CZ.

After skeet, we shot 2 rounds of trap. Now keep in mind, I am not a trap shooter and have never shot a regulation round of trap before. I have shot birds out of the trap house on 5 stand overlay fields and one time back in 1991 where I shot 15 or so birds of trap during an event at a club designed to expose people to the sport. I didn't have high hopes. I screwed out the cylinder choke from my top barrel that I had used for skeet and screwed in the modified choke. We shot from the 16 yard line and I ran station 1 and only missed one target on station 2. I had a couple of misses on each for stations 3 and 4. I missed one on station 5 for a 19. Two other guys joined us for the last round and we weren't keeping score on paper so I lost count on the second round of trap. I probably missed 1 or 2 more birds than the first round. I definitely did better on stations 1 and 5 than I did on 2,3, and 4. I knew about trying to cover the rising straight aways since I wasn't shooting a trap stock. Still missed some of them. It didn't help our scores on either skeet or trap that the wind was gusting to about 35 mph. The birds were definitely not flying consistently. Some of the low house birds that were missed would hit the fence that extended between the fields and some would clear it. Others would be outside the fence. The trap birds would sometimes not really rise but come out fairly flat and get pushed down into the tall grass sooner than they should. Others would rise like you would expect. All in all, a fun time was had by all.

I ran Bode the Wonderdog in a two day weekend field trial that the Joplin field trial club put on. It was the final event of the year and all the dogs in the running for dog of the year were scratching and clawing for enough points to put their dog over the top. My bird hunting schedule keeps me and Bode from being competitive for dog of the year, but that old road warrior put in a couple of runs good enough for first place yesterday and second place today for the overall win for the weekend. He was up against all the best dedicated field trial dogs in the area and came through big time. In the process, he ran in the same brace as a couple of the top dogs and knocked them out of contention for the year. Those of you who have hunted behind that old renegade can appreciate how satisfying this weekend was.

Outstanding! I hope he got a double cheeseburger, or at least a milkbone for his efforts!
Congrats to you and Bode.

Today, I had a chance to introduce a young man and his dad to trap and skeet.

His family has always deer hunted, but nothing to do with wingshooting. He is a freshman in high school and just found out about the Trap team.

So, I spent the afternoon with two new shooters, two 870 wingmasters, and two boxes of shells on station 7 on the skeet range. We had a ball.

After that we went to the Trap field and shot one round of Trap, so the young guy knows what Trap is, prior to his first practice on Wednesday.

Both dad and the young shooter are looking forward to the Trap season.

Congrats to both you and Bode! Well done!
I just opened an E-Mail from the Joplin Field Trial Association secretary and found out Bode took 5th place in the gundog championship while barely running half the events. Who knew? At 7 years old, he's finally the dream dog to run. He knows all the boundaries to the field trial grounds, he locks up solid on his points and waits for this old man to come shoot the bird (with a 16 ga SXS of course), and retrieves with a passion. He also is a bird finding SOB. On the two braces he ran this weekend, the only commands I had to give were, "Fetch it here" and "Give" to release the bird into my hand. Now all I need is for Rebel to figure out he's a real bird dog. Still waiting for the light to come on in his pea brain.
